qualifiers to the GraDe 1, $2,400,000
all american futurity
on Thursday, Aug. 16, a total of 26 trials were con- tested to determine the 10 fastest qualifiers to the Grade 1 All American Futurity. Despite the long day,
with racing starting at 9:30 a.m. and not concluding until nearly 10 hours later, the fickle Ruidoso weather remained relatively constant. An early morning rain ended before the first trial, and with the exception of shifting winds that graced some trials with a tail wind while remaining dormant for others, the weather condi- tions were stable for the entire day. Fastest qualifier PJ Chick In Black raced with zero wind, while Just Wanna Corona raced with the fastest tail wind of any qualifier at 15 mph. Only two horses—Native Tea Rose and Just Wanna Corona—came out of the early trials (seven and nine, respectively), while the other eight finalists came out of the final seven trials of the day.
When the finals run on Monday, Sept. 3, it will mark the 54th running of the All American Futurity. The race is the richest race for 2-year-olds of any breed in North America, and is the world’s richest Quarter Horse race. The winner will receive $1.2 Million.

Race Record: 5-5-0-0
PJ Chick In Black remained undefeated after five starts with a stun- ning 5 3/4-length victory in the 24th trial to the All American Futurity.
For her first four races, she was trained by Carl Draper, whose wife, Fredda, bred the filly and co-owned
her with Denny Bowen and Susie Taylor. For those connections, PJ Chick In Black won the New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2 and the Ruidoso Futurity-G1. After the latter futurity win, the filly was sold, with Bowen and Taylor retaining part ownership and adding a new partner in John and Lynn Smith’s Jack Smith Farms. She moved to the barn of trainer John Stinebaugh, who saddled her in the All American trials. PJ Chick In Black is one of three All American Futurity quali-
fiers trained by Stinebaugh, who will also be represented in the finals by third-fastest qualifier Krash Cartel and fourth-fastest qualifier Just Wanna Corona. She is the only All American Futurity finalist for her jockey, Esgar Ramirez, who has ridden the filly in all five of her career starts. PJ Chick In Black is the first foal out of the winning mare Eddie Jym, and is sired by the Strawfly Special son Desirio.
