Combined at this year’s sale, a total of
212 New Mexico-bred Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred yearlings sold for $3,236,400 (average per head, $15,266), an increase
of 42 percent over 2017, when 223 state-
bred yearlings sold for an aggregate sum of $2,277,100 (average per head, $10,211). This year’s per-head average represented a 50 percent increase over last year’s.
The New Mexico-Bred Sale also featured a Select Quarter Horse Foals in Utero Sale, held on Aug. 18. A total of 25 foals in utero were consigned, of which 18 sold for an aggregate sum of $356,700 (average per foal in utero, $19,817). There were seven repurchases.
The top seller from this portion of the sale (Hip No. 225), a Special Effort foal-in-utero from the Grade 1-winning Dash Ta Fame mare Five Bar Molly was purchased for $65,000 by Joe Dee Brooks of Levelland, Texas. Consigned by Dr. Rick Beck, the expected foal will be a half sibling to 2013 Champion 2 Year Old Five Bar Cartel and graded stakes winner Fly Bar Special.
The West Texas Racing Partnership paid $50,000 for a Mr Jess Perry foal-in-utero from 2003 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG1) winner Hidden Dragon, a 17-year-old daughter of Champion Dean Miracle. The foal-in-utero was consigned by Rafter W Stables and is a half sibling to multiple graded stakes winner Zulu Dragon and ’13 Mountain Top Futurity (R) winner Heza Wild Dragon.
During the three-day Ruidoso Select Quarter Horse Yearling Sale, held Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at
the Ruidoso Downs Sale Pavilion, 323 of the 386 yearlings offered sold for a gross sum of $15,032,000, an increase of 14 percent over the 2017 sale, when 308 of the 429 yearlings offered sold for a gross sum of $13,169,000.
The three-day average was $46,539, up 8 percent over last year’s average of $42,756.
Two of the yearlings sold at the Select Sale topped the $300,000 mark, headed by top seller Good Candy P (Hip No. 326). Don Cavenaugh paid $340,000 for Good Candy P, a sorrel son of Good Reason SA consigned by Lazy E Ranch LLC, agent for Michael Pohl. Good Candy P is out of Send Me This Wagon, a multiple stakes winning 7-year-old PYC Paint Your Wagon mare and a sibling to three stakes winners, including 2015 Champion 2 Year Old Jess Good Candy and Grade 2 winner This Candys Awesome.
Cavenaugh purchased the second-highest seller, A Sweet Jess (Hip No. 130), for $300,000 from the consignment of Roger Daly, agent
for Allred Bros. Ranch LLC. A sorrel son of Apollitical Jess out of the Grade 3-winning First Down Dash mare One Sweet Dash, the colt is a half-brother to three stakes winners, including
