Miss Princess Handicap-G3
JESS RAVIN
by Tracy Gantz
Los Alamitos is a tough place to win a stakes, but Jess Ravin has won six of them there, most recently in the Miss Princess Handicap-G3 on
May 13.
The result was really never in doubt. Fans
sent Jess Ravin away as the 7-10 favorite, and she performed like an odds-on choice should. With regular rider Jesus Ayala aboard, she rocketed to the front and never relinquished the lead, scoring by 1/2-length in :17.537 for 350 yards.
Yanet Rodriguez trains Jess Ravin for Enrique Gonzalez’s EG High Desert Farms. Prior to the Miss Princess, Jess Ravin collected the Las Damas Handicap-G3, La Pacifica Handicap, and Vandy’s Flash Handicap in 2016 and the Flare For Toby Handicap and Corona Kool Handicap this year, all at the California track.
You and Me Partners bred Jess Ravin in Oklahoma from graded stakes-placed winner Jessica Ravin. From the family of Champions Ive Been Blessed, This
Snow Is Royal, Florentine, Evening Snow, and Calyx, the mare has produced 100% money earners from
11 starters, including NM Hi-Point Aged Stallion/
top earner Jess Cuervo and New Track Record setter/ graded stakes winner Paintyourownwagon.
Carlos Huerta rode Time For Jess (Apollitical Jess-Coronation Time) to second for trainer Lin Melton and owner Spackman Racing.
Carolyn and Ralph Fales’ homebred All Right Now (FDD Dynasty-Already In Love) finished third for trainer Matthew Fales. Cruz Mendez was in the irons.
Completing the field were Zendaya (Foose-Red Hawk Chick), Apollitical Dasher (Apollitical Jess- Brazilian Dasher), Bring Me Home (Stel Corona-Bring Me Joy), Rutila (Walk Thru Fire-Kingman Kin), Micheles Jess (One Sweet Jess-Micheles Alibi) and Unfinished Biz (Captain Courage-Big Bizooms).
Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3
BH LISAS BOY
by Tracy Gantz
BH Lisas Boy kept his 2017 record perfect when he added the May 7 Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3 to his earlier victories in his trial and final of the Los
Alamitos Winter Championship-G1.
John Cooper trains BH Lisas Boy for owner/
breeder Bill Hoburg. Cooper is no stranger to win- ning the Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3, having taken it with Champion Moonist in 2015. Also like Moonist, BH Lisas Boy went off as the odds-on favorite in
the Kaweah Bar. Under jockey Cesar DeAlba, who rode Moonist in the 2015 Kaweah Bar Handicap, BH Lisas Boy broke out from the 1-gate but quickly took the lead at the first call. The 5-year-old gelding rushed home to win by 3/4-length in :17.548 to earn a 94 speed index.
The Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3 was BH Lisas Boy’s sixth stakes victory, and he has captured at least one stakes win every year that he has raced.
Bill Hoburg homebred BH Lisas Boy in Idaho from 2-time winner and graded stakes finalist Apollo Snowbound. She has produced 100% winners/ROM from five starters, including NW Hi-Point Distance Horse/Grade 1 winner Yin Your Eyes and NW Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Gelding BH Country Chrome. Two-time New Track Record setter BH Lisas Boy is her top earner with $334,006. The gelding set a New Track Record at Emerald Downs for 440 yards then later beat that same record.
Jose Nicasio rode El Remalcable (Two Corona Special-Remarkable Power) to second for trainer Felix Gonzalez and owner Jesus Daniel Padilla.
Ed Allred’s homebred He Looks Hot (Walk Thru Fire-Look Her Over) ran third with Carlos Huerta in the irons. The gelding is trained by Scott Willoughby.
Mr PYC To You (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Stylish Sign) finished fourth with Winners Cool Chick (Winners Version-Feature Cool Chick) fifth.
Dillingham Handicap
STELFAST
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Valentin Zamudio made an excellent private purchase in Stelfast last winter for owner Eva Carrazco. The gelding has never finished worse than second in four starts for the connections, and in his fifth start for them he added the $25,000 Dillingham Handicap at Los Alamitos on May 6.
Despite having just won the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3, Stelfast went off as the 4-1 third choice, with Golden State Million Futurity-G1 winner Lotta Blues Man the even-money favorite. Lotta Blues Man had a bad start while Stelfast began in excellent fashion on top. Stelfast continued on under jockey Cruz Mendez to lead throughout the 400 yards and win by a 1/2-length in :19.740.
Trainer Paul Jones and Marcello Jorge bred Stelfast in California from graded stakes winner The Goodbye Kisser, winner of the 2010 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity-G1 and John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge. The mare has produced 100% money earners with four winners from five starters, including stakes-placed Favorite Kiss. Lipstick Kiss, the second dam, is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Read My Lipstick and to two stakes-placed runners. Stelfast is The Goodbye Kisser’s first stakes winner.
Bannister (Maknmoves-Goddess Artemis) ran second for owners Denny and Sandy Weigt. Monty Arossa trains the gelding and Jesus Ayala piloted him.
Jones trains and co-owns That Rico (Carters Cartel-Jess Like That), who finished third with Roberto Hernandez aboard. Jones owns the gelding with Thompson Racing Inc.
Completing the field were Favorite Aquaholic (Favorite Cartel-Aqua Hawk), On The Go (Foose-Jetsetter), Myfavoritestreaker (Favorite Cartel-Checkoutthestreaker), Hold Sway (Foose- Feminista), and Lotta Blues Man (Favorite Cartel- Lotta Love For Robyn).
