Mexico Futurity
REINA DE REINAS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The record participation of 180 two year olds bred in Mexico from the 392 auctioned
in 2016 required 22 qualifying races to the Mexico Futurity final. These were held on April 22 and 23 at a distance of 250 yards, obtaining five finalists on each date. The dif- ferent speed and direction of the wind caused important differences in the times reported
in each day, and the ten finalists came about from only five trials. Among them was the gelding Hippy Dashin Horse, who in race 7 of the second day achieved the best time of :12.976 and capturing the preference in the odds to win the final.
The final date was May 14. All contes- tants were in excellent physical and mental condition, the result of careful preparation. With great care, they were saddled and taken to the track with their respective rider on board. The expectation was palpable since this is the first restricted futurity for runners of national breeding. The race was endowed with a purse of 2,762,525 pesos (approximately US $146,135) to distribute among the ten finalists.
The race was marred by infractions, how- ever, that prevented some individuals and their riders to show their full potential on the track. Once again, whoever does not get involved
in the crash or those whose starting position and the ability of the rider to circumnavigate, wins. A lot is attributed to luck. This time it was the sorrel filly Reina De Reinas who took the top prize. With the support of José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, they escaped with ease from position 9. Next to her closed Fearless Kid, who left from gate 10, while third place was for Divina Jess coming from gate 7.
The favorite, Hippy Dashin Horse, was given a double-header. First, he was leaned on his right side by Pantera Down Dash. Then a few strides forward, Waters Miracle hit Pantera Down Dash, who almost fell. This action again sent Hippy Dashin Horse to the left, and these two were left without much opportunity to win.
After inquiries and protests and in a con- troversial decision, the stewardess disqualified Rey de Reyes from fourth to last place.
At the end of this protocol, the official winner was given a time of :13.02 and a 97 speed index for Reina De Reinas, passing to the podium with her rider and the team of Cuadra San Lazaro de Arara to receive the corresponding honors.

She reached the finals after winning her trial on April 23 with a time of :13.085, the third fastest time, under the guidance of Moisés González García, who also qualified the previous day with Pantera Down Dash. The jockey opted to run with Pantera Down Dash in the finals, thus giving his place to José Ángel Ambrosio. Reina De Reinas maintains a perfect record of three wins in an equal num- ber of outings, and she increased her profits account by $1,160,260 pesos (approximately
US $61,376).
Fearless Kid (Fearless
Fritz-Teller Jessie) gave a very good try and finished second by 1/2-length well managed by Jose Manuel Rosado. He ran in the name of Cuadra El Mashta and was saddled by Ramón Guerrero Trejo. The colt was bred by Rachuán Suárez Kuri.
After the disqualifica- tion of Rey De Reyes, third place went to Divina Jess (Royal Invasor-Jess
