The photo on page 167 shows Shawne Savage (Jungle Savage TB-Cathys Ladybug, Shawne Bug) winning the Sooner State Stakes under jockey Randy Wilson for trainer Durk Peery at Remington Park on May 26, 1991.
Shawne Savage was bred in Oklahoma by Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Adams, who raced the gelding in partnership with Henry Bowlan. Shawne Savage was the only stakes winner out of stakes placed Cathys Ladybug, who set a 220-yard New Track Record at Ross Meadows in 1982.
Shawne Savage had a tough time of it after he broke his jaw at two years of age, needing several surgeries throughout his career. “Shawne Savage has been a real hard luck horse,” said Henry Bowlan in 1991. “He broke his jaw before he started running. He finally got his chance in the Oklahoma Bred Futurity at Blue Ribbon Downs, which he won. He had a total of five starts at three because his jaw kept opening up and abscessing. We had to have his jaw operated on twice and had some teeth removed.”
Shawne Savage overcame his obstacles, however, earning $117,659 in his career with a race record of 11(5)-4(1)-2(2) from 29 starts. Beside three Sooner State Stakes victories in from 1991 to 1993, and the 1989 Oklahoma Bred Futurity, he also won the 1990 Blue Ribbon 440 Derby-G3.
This year’s $100,000 Grade 1 Sooner Stakes was held at Remington Park on May 6 and was won by VF Red Surprise for her first stakes victory.
