The Draper plan from the beginning was to breed or buy the horses they would add to their racing stable. The idea was to have ownership, or at least part ownership, of the horses in their racing stable. The breeding
of horses for the stable led to the adding
of broodmares to the program. One of the mares that was added was Super Perla Negra, a daughter of Super Duper Couper. She finished first, second or third in 14 of her 34 starts with a racing ROM and went to the Draper broodmare band after her career on the track. When bred to Genuine Strawfly, Super Perla Negra produced Jenuine Joy, the 2016 Speedhorse Co-Broodmare of the Year.
Jenuine Joy was foaled in 2006 and didn’t meet with success on the track until 2010 and 2011. She had to recover from a shoulder injury in a starting gate incident at the age
of two, but Jenuine Joy returned to the track to win five stakes races, including the Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Stakes-RG1 and the Four Corners Senora Stakes in 2010. She also won the Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap-RG2, the Tommy “Duke” Smith Handicap-RG2, and the Zia Handicap-RG2 in 2011. Jenuine Joy had 15 starts, eight wins, one second, and two thirds, earning $382,230 on the track.
“Let me tell you, she could run,” Fredda
said of Jenuine Joy’s speed. “I look at her win pictures and there was no tailwind when she ran 350 yards in :16.76 at Sunland Park. She ran the Tommy Duke Handicap, and Larry Payne said it was a good thing he took a deep seat as she ran 400 yards in :19.87. She also ran the 400-yard Lou Wooten in :18.907. She could fly.”
A look at the pedigree of Jenuine Joy indicates she carries the tried and true blood of horses like Special Effort, Dash For Cash, and Beduino TB - all typical bloodlines found in racing Quarter Horse pedigrees today. But on further investigation, her pedigree is also influenced by Teddy TB through some key individuals.
Genuine Strawfly, the sire of Jenuine
Joy, was late meeting his potential on the track. Trained by Carl Draper, he went
0 for 3 at two, but came back at 3 to
win the All American Derby-G1 and the Ruidoso Derby-G1. He earned $181,091 with four wins and two seconds from 14 starts. Genuine Strawfly is the sire of over
$7 million. His leading money earners include One Diamond Kitty ($559,302), Herekittykittykitty ($556,824), and Genuine American ($318,013).
The sire of Genuine Strawfly is Strawfly Special, winner of the 1999 Southern California Derby. Strawfly Special, raced by Jack Hall of Corona, California, is a multiple stakes placed runner with a second in the Bay Meadows Futurity-G1. He earned $222,920 from 25 starts with 11 wins, 4 seconds, and 3 thirds.
Strawfly Special was sold to Jens L. List,
Jr., where he stood at the Double Bar S Ranch in Temecula, California. He sired the earners of $25,837,635. His leading money earner is 1999 and 2001 World Champion Taylor Fit ($1,296,752). Strawfly Special is also the sire of the All American Futurity-G1 winners Streakin Flyer (in 1996) and Ausual Suspect (in 2001).
Strawfly Special is by Ruidoso Triple Crown winner Special Effort, owned by Dan and Jolene Urschel. The only horse ever to win the Ruidoso Triple Crown, Special Effort won the Kansas, Rainbow and All American Futurities in 1981 and was named World Champion that year. He won 13 of 14 starts and earned $1,219,950.
Special Effort is the sire $18,816,626, including 1,048 ROM and 75 stakes winners. His stakes winners include Champions Special Leader, Easygo Effort, Special Project, Bully Bullion, Sweet N Special, Special Phoebe, and Concorde Special.
