 Q Racing Distance Chal. S.
FRee StAteR
by Tracy Gantz
though Free Stater broke his maiden at 440 yards, he has come into his own around the hook. His penchant for a distance makes sense as he is out of the Thoroughbred mare Free Bird Fly and by Separatist, whose two grandsires are both Thoroughbreds.
In the Oct. 26 Q Racing Distance Challenge Stakes at Prairie Meadows, Free Stater got away in fifth under Stormy Smith. Free Stater edged into the lead between horses as the field headed into the turn. He had everything his own way to the wire, winning by 2 1/4 lengths in :45.932 as the 6-5 favorite.
Charles Hunt trains Free Stater for owner- breeders J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley. Free Stater won a claiming race earlier this year in his first attempt at 870 yards. His subsequent races at that distance include a second in the Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge-G3 and a third in the Red Cell Prairie Meadows Distance Challenge-G3.
Winner Free Bird Fly earned $42,382. Free Stater is her first foal. She has a yearling Quarter Horse and two foals of 2012, one Quarter Horse and one Thoroughbred. Free Bird Fly was bred back to the Thoroughbred stallion Euroears, a millionaire multiple graded stakes winner.
Thomas Wellington rode Snow Kan (Royal Evening Snow-Kita Kan) to second for owner-trainer Donald D. Davidson Jr. The 5-year-old gelding has won three claiming races this year at 870 yards.
Jack Jessee (Jesses Sixes-Lotta Drift) finished third for owner Tom Maher, trainer Ernest Fennell, and jockey Jeramie Fennell. The 3-year-old gelding was making his first attempt at 870 yards.
Completing the field were Oh Cooper Go (Apollo TB-Oh Strawfly Go), Haulin Thunder (Streakin La Jolla-Sweet As Cash), Down N Cool (Brimmerton- Cool N Sixy-TB), and Ride Lonesome (Shazoom- Blushing Lady Bug). Doyles Dashing Star, Legendary Express, and Sweet Easy Cash were scratched.
Farnam Stakes
bARACKAZooM
by Stacy Pigott
barackazoom brought a stellar record into the $25,000 Farnam Stakes, and added a stakes win to his resume with a strong showing in the 440-yard
event on Oct. 27 at Prairie Meadows.
Owned by Larry Toombs, Barackazoom was the
Oklahoma Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Gelding last year
when he was second in both the Will Rogers Derby Challenge-G3 and Black Gold Derby, third in the Heritage Place Derby-G2 and seventh in the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby. This year, Barackazoom finished second and first in allowance company for trainer Amber Blair leading up to the Farnam.
Breaking well from post six under Mark Luark, Barackazoom trailed only Fames Wagonburner in the early stages. He found the lead by the midway point, and held off a strong challenge from Jesse In Town to win by a neck in :21.636. His fifth win and first stakes win was worth $12,250 and increased his earnings to $132,149.
The William and Betty Toombs Trust bred Barackazoom out of Jazzy Smash, a five-time winner. All 12 of her foals are starters, with nine winners including stakes winners Smashing Form and Jazzy Corona, and stakes placers Smashingly Formed, Taken On The Jazz and Holland Fireball.
The 5-year-old gelding Jesse In Town (Feature Mr Jess-Whatsthatfillysname) finished second under Cody Jensen. Mary Passmore Kirby owns Jesse In Town, who is trained by Jackie Kirby.
Favored High Rate Of Return (Mr Jess Perry- Dividends Declared) crossed the wire third. LMR 2011 owns the 3-year-old colt, who was ridden by Stormy Smith for trainer Ed Hardy.
The top three were followed by Legendary Express (Ocean Runaway-Metered Express), Fames Wagonburner (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Fames Qtpi), Jess A Runner (Jess Louisiana Blue-Katiebug Driver), and Struttin High (Struttin To Beduino-Regally Rare). Vodka With Ice was scratched.
John Deere Stakes
the SunDAy ASSASSin
by Stacy Pigott
the Sunday Assassin just missed in his bid to qualify for the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G1, finishing third in the Will Rogers Derby Challenge.
The change in plans worked to his favor, however, as the gelding instead won the $25,000 John Deere Stakes on the AQHA Challenge Championship Night undercard on Oct. 27 at Prairie Meadows.
The Sunday Assassin has done well in the AQHA Racing Challenge program, as he was second in last year’s Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge for owner Bowen Arrow Farms. Wayne Garner trains The Sunday Assassin, who recorded his fourth career win and first stakes win in
the John Deere. Ridden by G.R. Carter Jr., The Sunday Assassin was hard to load into post position 10, and
then broke inward to bump Cmon Man. In mid-pack for much of the 400 yards, The Sunday Assassin passed horses late to win by a half-length in :19.809.
Corner K Quarter Horses bred The Sunday Assassin out of winner Oh Dusty Bunny. He is her third stakes winner from 10 foals including JEH Stallion Station Handicap winner Dash On Line, multiple graded stakes winner Chicks Gray Blurr, and stakes-placed winners First Down Bunny and Dustys Alibi.
Recent allowance winner Wave Good Bye
Baby (Wave Carver-Baby La Jolla) was second with Jeramie Fennell in the irons for trainer Jose Barron. Hugo Barron Sierra owns the gelding.
In third was Mr Corona Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue-Corona With Ice). Charlton Hunt trains the gelding for owner Nancy McCoy. Cody Smith rode.
Rouding out the field were Specials Gold (Voghts Gold-Special Anywhere), Surfin Waves (Ocean Runaway-Lady Dee Vee Em), D E Trubador (Separatist-Wagons Maiden), Cmon Man (Corona Cartel-Ima Ramblin Girl), Perry Cartel (Teller Cartel-Perrys Queen Bug), and Uncle Sam Sweetfly (Hawkinson-Shes Sweet N Can Fly). Ride Lonesome was scratched.
