  Future of Iowa Stakes
JeSS a lITTle TwISTeD
by Tracy Gantz
with a night of stakes devoted to Iowa- breds, Jess A Lil Twisted had a couple of options. The 3-year-old filly could challenge males her own age in the 400-yard Polk County Derby, or she could go up against older fillies and mares in the 350-yard Future Of Iowa Stakes. Owner-breeder Sheri Lynn Andrew and trainer Brent Clay decided on the Future Of Iowa, where Jess A Lil Twisted went off as the 6-5 favorite and
won for fun.
From post position four,
Rhinestone Ready outbroke Jess A Lil Twisted, in the five hole, and Ru A Quick Cat on the inside rail quickly took over the lead. Halfway down the stretch, Jess A Lil Twisted found her best stride, and under jockey Stormy Smith she coasted home two lengths on top in :17.351 for a speed index of 102.
Smith has ridden Jess A Lil Twisted
in seven of her eight starts, missing only
when he defeated her in the 2011 Jim Bader Futurity aboard Eufaula Me. Eufaula Me, trained by Clay, won this year’s Polk County Derby. In addition to her Bader second, Jess A Lil Twisted has won a maiden and an allow- ance race. She has now earned $78,983 includ- ing the $27,552 winner’s share from the Future
of Iowa Stakes.
Yawls Baby, the dam of
Jess A Lil Twisted, set a track record of :17.610 for 350 yards at Prairie Meadows in 1989. She has produced 10 winners from 11 starters, including Holland As Yawl, winner
of the 1999 Bader Futurity and 2000 Polk County Derby, and stakes-placed Yawls Spreadn Rumors and Yesesnosnmaybes.
Clay also trains The Regal
Streak (A Regal Choice-Raise A Sixy), who was the second choice in the wagering and got up to finish second by a neck under Oscar Delgado. Michael Ahern owns the 5-year-old mare, who won the Future Of Iowa in 2011. The Regal Streak’s stakes-placings include the 2010 Polk County Derby and 2011 Scorpion Stakes.
Vernon Hammes’ homebred TRS A Classy Dash (Hot Shot Dash-Pure Ol Class) ran third. Troy Crissup rode the 4-year-old filly for trainer Ronald Sayre. TRS A Classy Dash fin- ished second in last year’s Iowa Stallion Derby.
Rounding out the field were Shake Yor Moneymaker (Royal Shake Em-Chicks Dumpling Two), Ru A Quick Cat (Kool Quick Kid-Ru Chikita), Rhinestone Ready (Spanish Boot-Purtee Snappy), Hail Yez (Hail Corona- Beduinos Heart), and Jump N Streak (Ten Streaks-Barjump Joy).

 Terrace hill Stakes-rg3
IrIS CarTelSBaDnewS
by Tracy Gantz
It’s a good thing that Iris Cartelsbadnews is an Iowa-bred because he loves Prairie Meadows. The 5-year-old gelding has started 18 times, 14
of them at Prairie Meadows, and eight of his nine victories have come at that Iowa track, most recently in the Oct. 26 Terrace Hill Stakes-RG3.
Diamond Cruzer sped to the early
lead in the 400-yard Terrace Hill. Iris Cartelsbadnews, sent away the 2-5 favorite, broke from the outside and
quickly challenged Diamond
Cruzer. Berkley Packer
rode Iris Cartelsbadnews
confidently, and the pair
seemed to have the Diamond
Cruzer’s measure when Oscar
Delgado suddenly pulled
up Diamond Cruzer, easing
him to the wire in fifth. Iris Cartelsbadnews won by 1 1/4
lengths in :19.686.
Amy Wessels trains Iris Cartelsbadnews for
owner-breeder Warren Garrels. The gelding was completing a perfect four-for-four season this year at Prairie Meadows. He began the streak with two allowance victories, followed by the Two Rivers Stakes-G3 and the Terrace Hill. Iris Cartelsbadnews finished second in last year’s Terrace Hill and third in the 2010 Polk County Derby and 2012 Dash In A Flash Stakes.
Unraced Another Hot Idea produced Iris Cartelsbadnews and six other
winners from nine start-
ers. Those winners include Sunday Irish, who finished second in the 2009 Future Of Iowa Stakes. The second dam, Hot Idea, won the 1977 All American Futurity and was the AQHA Champion 2-Year- Old Filly that season.
Brent and Karen Clay’s homebred Shake Em Streakin (Shake Em Open-Miss Fine La Jolla) ran second with Juan
Vazquez in the irons. Brent Clay trains the 5-year-old gelding, who was coming off of two consecutive victories. Shake Em Streakin won the 2010 Iowa Stallion Derby.
Stormy Smith rode Wheres Your Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Yawls Spreadn Rumors) to third for owner Kay Sage and trainer Kirk Wessels. Winner of last year’s Polk County Derby, Wheres Your Wagon ran third in this year’s Bank Of America Prairie Meadows Championship Challenge-G2.
Completing the field were Mean Fastball (Shake Em Open-Azure Te Fastball), Diamond Cruzer (Struttin To Beduino-West Crest Dance), Hadleybestoned (SC Chiseled In Stone-Pipsqueak Shazoom), Eyeowa Cyclone (Mr Eye Opener-Countess Rare Bar), and
Man N Black (Mr Eye Opener-This Chicks A Ruler). Heza Fast Shake was scratched.
