Ocala Plans To Run Quarter Horse Race
The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company (OBS) plans to run a Quarter Horse race on Dec. 11
at their facility in Florida, in order to activate
a 25-year-old permit for Quarter Horse racing that would allow them to pursue a card room
or other forms of gambling in the future. OBS joins other organizations seeking to exploit gam- bling opportunities by avoiding regulations that require Thoroughbred permit holders to distrib- ute of 50% of the revenue from card rooms to horsemen. This 50% distribution is not required of Quarter Horse permit holders.

Jockey Raul Ramirez Sr. Dies
Longtime jockey Raul Ramirez Sr., 61, died Oct. 21 in San Antonio, Texas, following an au- tomobile accident when another vehicle veered into his lane. Ramirez, of Laredo, was born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. He rode the winners of 147 races with earnings of nearly $1 million. Ramirez is survived by his wife Alicia, children Francisco Raul, Esmeralda, Roger, Rolando, Raul Jr., Victoria, Ruben, Rafael, Noralva Co- rona, Patricia Fernandez and Rosalva Martinez, as well as 37 grandchildren, and numerous other family and friends.
Shelley Nicodemus Dies
Shelley Leigh Nicodemus, 45, daughter of AQHA Hall of Fame Jockey Jerry Nicodemus, was killed in a motorcycle accident outside of Houston, Texas on Oct. 28. Nicodemus, who was a passenger on the vehicle, was an investiga- tor for the Fort Bend County Sherriff special crimes unit. She is survived by her daughter, Katy, and her father, winner of three All Ameri- can Futurities and the only jockey to have ever ridden Dash For Cash.
Court Accepts Bid For Yavapai Downs
According to The Daily Courier, a bankruptcy court on Oct. 30 approved the tentative
sale of Yavapai Downs in Prescott Valley for $5.5 million to Gary Miller, president of the Arizona Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association. Approval of the deal was first given by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which holds $14.65 million in loans on the track. There will be a 45-90 day due diligence period before the final sale of the facility, which has

Trainer John Bassett Announces Retirement
Leading trainer John Bassett announced his retirement in late October following a 10-year suspension an $10,000 fine for two dermorphin positives in New Mexico. The Bassett family issue a statement indicating that the rulings are still being appealed, despite Bassett’s retirement. John Bassett trained 11 Champions during his career, including A Delightful Dasher, Dean Miracle, First To Flash, Hes My Dasher, Heza Fast Man, Little Bit Of Baja, One Famous Eagle, Royaltime Classic, Teller Cartel, Tres Seis and Whosleavingwho.

red pepper
1/2 onion, chopped 1 can chopped green
chilies 4 eggs
1/4 C. flour

Chili Relleno Casserole

Grade 1 Recipe:
Preheat over to 375 degrees. Brown meat & onion. Add salt, pepper & about 1 T. red pepper. In a casserole dish, place whole green chilies on the bottom. Top with cheese and then meat. Add another layer of chees, then the can of chopped green chilies.
Mix 4 eggs and milk. Add flour and mix well. Pour over dish. Bake around 50 minutes.
