A Night with the Legends of Quarter Horse Racing opened the Heritage Place Fall Sale on Oct. 31. AQHA’s all-time leading rider G.R. Carter Jr. and Track Magazine’s Ben Hudson emceed the event, which looked at the careers of nine riding legends. Shown in the photo are Curtis Perner, Charley Smith, Donald Allison, Jerry Burgess, Ben Hudson, G. R. Carter, Jr., Kenny Hart, Tami Purcell, Danny Cardoza, Tommey Jean Swan and James Lackey. Jerry Nicodemus was invited to the event, but could not make it as his daughter Shelley was killed in an accident Oct. 28.

Jeanette Moehrig Passes Away
a reputation as being gentle and intuitive with horses, but was refused a jockey license at most larger tracks because of her gender. She instead raced in exhibition and match races. Davis in 1949 won a match race against National Racing Hall of Famer Johnny Longden in Agua Caliente, Mexico, as well as a match race against National Racing Hall of Famer Jack Westrope. In 2004 she was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. She is survived by her son Dr. Tad Davis.
Equine Encephalitis Linked To Snakes
According to The Horse, a study by Thomas Unnasch, PhD has found that snakes can harbor Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEEV) through their hibernation and provide a source of the virus for mosquitoes pick up the next season and transmit to horses. Prior to the study, it was unknown if snakes were hosts for EEEV and it was uncertain how the virus survived the winter in areas of the U.S. The study, “Detection of eastern encephalomyelitis virus in RNA in North American snakes,” was published by the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
