                                  Selecta Auction Derby
N SURE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
There were 23 individuals competing in the qualifying races to the Selecta Auction Derby on Aug. 14 to determine the 10 final- ists, who returned to the stage for the finals in Mexico City two weeks later at a distance of 400 yards for a prize of $1,067,675 pesos (approximately US $57,881).
There were three races in the trials, with many of the individuals arriving at the peak of development in their physique and athleticism. All had Mexican breeding, were in the 2014 auction, ran in the respective futurity, and
had owners who paid the required fees that contributed a substantial part of the purse to be distributed.
Officially, the best qualifying time cor- responded to the colt Mojito Limes, who ran in the second trial in :19.56. The black filly
N Sure, who ran and won the first trial by more than a length, was disqualified with an appropriate time penalty, leaving her ranked in fifth place with :19.97; just enough to sneak in with the tenth time.
That was enough to attend the final event, in which she received broad support from the fans to win the Derby; timely and successfully fulfilling her mission. It is worthwhile to note that the final group consisted of only seven runners after the scratching of El Jamaikino,
Ferdy Ruby, and Thru Fire Corona.
In the Selecta Auction
Derby finals, the anxiety of
the filly Separate Snow Moon
(#6) led to her delayed depar-
ture and left her without a
chance to race well. The action occurred at the extreme ends of the track: along the rail, Moon Horse Ryon (#1) took the lead followed by N Sure (#2) and Silver Perry (#5); while on the outside lane, Mojito Limes (#8) barreled with decisiveness and freedom towards the goal.
It was a matter of N Sure settling in the muddy track under the expert guidance of Moises González García, and she began dominating the race with authority, crossing the finish 1 1/4-lengths in front of Silver Perry with a time of :19.68 for 91 speed index.
The jubilation invaded members of the Juarez family, owners of the runner, as they clearly saw their filly lead and cross the wire in a flash. It was a celebration that lasted throughout the award ceremony in the win- ner’s circle.
N Sure (Native Cartel - Sure Alibi, by Sir Alibi) was bred by Salvador Oñate Ascensio, Rancho Hacienda Santiago, who consigned her in the Selecta Auction Yearling Sale. The filly
was purchased at $276,000 pesos ($21,230 US approxi- mately), being the second highest price fetched in the ring during the event. Since then, the filly has been a part of Cuadra San Antonio AJH.
In 19 starts, she has forged a record of 9 wins, including the Arcadio Espinoza Clasico, the Mexican Breeders Futurity, and Selecta Auction Derby, for which she received a reward of $448,423 pesos (approximately US $24,310).
Native Cartel, sire of N Sure, is a win-
ner of many stakes in Mexico, allowing him
to accumulate earnings of $108,229 and be designated Two-Year Old American Champion and Horse of the Year in Mexico. His progeny have earned more than $675,000, of which highlights include runner Native Posies, NC Rose, and NC Gucci Shoes. Meanwhile, the mare Sure Alibi has also produced Holland Sure, stakes winner of $83,085.
Silver Perry (Jesstified - Ziplock Chick) made a great race and took second place, the same result in his previous start against N Sure, this time assisted by Lauro Vazquez, his resident rider. Silver Perry is owned by the Cuadra Gomac, was saddled by trainer Carlos Vazquez Marquez, and was bred by Everardo Múzquiz.
