John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge
AGENT PROVOCATEUR
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Thirty two year olds competed in the trials to the John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge in four groups on July 24 to determine the 10 finalists to compete for the finals on Aug. 14 at a distance of 350 yards, vying for a prize of $616,248 pesos (approximately $31,103 U.S. dollars).
Two runners from Cuadra San Lazaro
de Arara got the highest marks for the
finale: Agent Provocateur and One Shining Ocean, both with outstanding records at the Hipodromo de las Americas. The first, Agent Provocateur finished second in the The Prize Clasico, for which she was disqualified but displayed good skills; while, the gelding One Shining Ocean was the recent winner of the Jodys Glory Clasico.
As such, these sprinters appeared as heavy favorites in the betting windows, although the surprise factor is always considered in the face of two year olds.
Ready at the starting gates, the race had
a flawless start, all exiting cleanly. The late start of One Shining Ocean (#2) was notable as he drove towards the inner rail and almost
made contact, thus losing
all chance in the competi-
tion. At the other end, Agent
Provocateur from gate 9
used her speed and outside
position to take control of
the action guided by Moises
González García. The filly
had to hold off the pressure
coming from the middle
of the track exercised by
Enthusiastique (#5), Beer
Wagon (#7) and RG Connie
My Love (#6), a trio that seemed to alternate dominance in the final strides of the race.
The first to cross the finish line was the grey Agent Provocateur by a distance of a neck, while second and third place were defined by the respective photo to Beer Wagon and RG Connie My Love, respectively. The travel time was :17.35, for a speed index of 94.
The awards ceremony was led by Luis Miguel Albores, owner of Cuadra San Lazaro of Arara and breeder in the United States of the grey filly, a daughter of Walk Thru Fire
and out of the mare Favored, by Teller Cartel. For the AQHA and AMCCCCM, Adriana Gomez presented the trophies and respective buckles.
The filly qualified to the finals from the fourth trial, which she won by more than a length in a time of :17.29. Also qualifying from the same round were Jess B Impressive and Enthusiastique.
It was Agent Provocateur’s second win in four starts with earnings of $283,474 pesos (approximately US $15,518), adding points to the record of trainers Rafael Alejandro Contreras Gonzalez and jockey Moises Gonzalez Garcia.
Beer Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon - Fredaville) was left with a creditable second place, assisted by Jose Angel Ambrosio for Cuadra El Mashta and trainer Juan Jose Razo.
The sorrel filly RG Connie My Love (High Rate Of Return - Note The Chick) took third
