Mexican Derby
CHICS LOVE CURLS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The Mexican Derby is the race in which the Mexican triple crown for Quarter Horses closes. The two previous competitions were the Easily A Possum Clasico, won by RG Golden King, and the AMCCCCM Clasico, which was won by Chics Love Curls.
It was on July 31 when 10 three year olds ran at 400 yards for a prize of $305,600 pesos (approximately US $16,171) in the Mexican Derby. The sole representative of Mexican upbringing was the sorrel Senor Cawboy. It was a very diverse group in terms of athletic record, where the above mentioned along with the fillies Muscles Diablo and Fast Prize Robyn and the colt Pile Of Money, were the most promising to set the pace of the odds.
A moderate rain preceded the race, and reporting status indicated the track as “good”. The start was free of contact or collisions, each taking their racing lane. Immediately, Muscles Diablo (#1) took the lead decisively on the inside rail of the track. But at the other end
of the track, Chics Love Curls (#7) displayed his power and went after the black filly and
beat her to the wire while feeling the harassment of Senor Cawboy (#8), who was out-finished by 3/4-length. It took 19.37 seconds to com- plete the scheduled distance, in which Chics Love Curls obtained a speed index of 99.
Thus, Chics Love Curls
(Spit Curl Jess - First Prize
Chic, by Country Chicks
Man) added a third win to his
record, which remains perfect.
He debuted on Nov. 29, 2015, triumphing in the Jesus “Nuchi” Jimenez Clasico at 350 yards, his maiden race and his only start as a two year old. In his first participation of the 2016 season on May 22, he won the AMCCCCM Clasico at 400 yards with a time of :19.27.
Chics Love Curls was bred in the United States by Weetona Stanley and sold as a yearling in 2014 at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma, being acquired by Arturo Olvera Bernal for $10,500. He is currently
owned by the Diaz de
Leon Cuadra and trained
at Rancho Santín, Toluca, State of Mexico. In this
race, he was saddled by Jose Manuel Martinez Garcia and received a financial reward of $183,360 pesos (approxi- mately US $9,703).
As indicated above, Senor Cawboy (Senior Solo - Takin Cash SLC) finished second under the direction
of Yair Daniel Baez for Rancho San Pedro PZH and trainer Gregorio Alberto Razo. This colt gained notoriety in 2015 when
he won the Selecta Auction Futurity and was appointed AQHA Mexican Champion, Mexican Champion Two Year Old and Best Mexican Individual.
Muscles Diablo (Valiant Hero - Zoomin To Win) ran out of steam in the final yards and gave away positioning, finishing in third place well ridden by Moisés González García for
