When Got Country Grip dominated Paint racing from 2005-2010, he put together a record that looked like it might never be equaled—until Painted Turnpike came along.
Got Country Grip earned $361,863 to vault atop the all-time Paint racing earners list. That accomplishment withstood the onslaught of several excellent Paints, including 2-time World Champion Flashthechicks, who earned $315,465.
At the end of 2016, Painted Turnpike had dead aim on Got Country Grip’s earnings record, having edged past Flashthechicks into the second place spot.
Owner Nolan Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, deserves great credit for giving Painted Turnpike the opportunity to catch Got Country Grip. Pevehouse bred Painted Turnpike in Oklahoma from a line of mares that he has developed back through the horse’s first four dams. Pevehouse gave the son of PYC Paint Your Wagon and out of High Class Turnpike his first lessons at his farm before turning him over to trainer Matt Whitekiller.
Painted Turnpike won his first World Championship title at two in 2015, when he became the first horse to win the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown. He added a second World Championship in 2016, and Pevehouse brought him back at age 4, when Painted Turnpike became the all-time leading Paint earner and won a third consecutive World Championship title.
Not only did Painted Turnpike overtake Got Country Grip, he did it with a perfect record in 2017—six wins in six starts. And he did it after taking some time out to cover several mares.
Painted Turnpike began the year at Remington Park, capturing the Mr Lewie Memorial Handicap-G1 and National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Stakes-G1. Those victories put Painted Turnpike in
the position to overtake Got Country Grip with a
win in the July 8 Lewis Wartchow Memorial at Fair Meadows. As the 1-10 favorite, he scored easily by 1 1/2-lengths, completing 350 yards in :17.452.
Painted Turnpike added to that earnings record with three more wins at Will Rogers Downs. Two of those came in allowance races, and in between those he added the Oct. 15 Green Country Handicap. Against four rivals, including his full brother Gitter Dun Turnpike, Painted Turnpike won the Green Country by 1-length.
“This horse is just stupid-good,” said Whitekiller. “He loves to run. He’s a joy to be around.”
