Breeder: Ronna Lively
Owner: Michael Moss
2017 Record: 8-3(1)-2(1)-2(1), $37,909, Cricket Bars F., 2nd Speedhorse Lone Star P&A F-G1, 3rd Colors of the Alamo P&A F.
Apollos Second Sign adds another championship level to her pedigree, which is an interesting mix
of Appaloosa, Quarter Horse, and Thoroughbred bloodlines. Her accomplishments during 2017 earned her Appaloosa Horse of the Year, Supreme Champion 2 Year Old, and Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. Her sire, the Quarter Horse Second Painted Sign, is a half-brother to The Fiscal Cliff, the Quarter Horse Champion Aged Stallion of 2017.
The Thoroughbred part of Apollos Second Sign comes from broodmare sire Apollo,
also a fast runner. In 1991, he equaled the world record of 1:10.50 for 5 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park in California.
Ronna Lively bred Apollos Second Sign in Oklahoma from the stakes-placed Apollo TB mare Allies Apollo. The mare’s first foal, Allies Favorite Okey, is a stakes-placed daughter of the Quarter Horse Okey Dokey Dale. Apollos Second Sign is the mare’s second runner.
Apollos Second Sign debuted at Remington Park for owner Michael Moss, who also trained the filly. She improved in every start, going from fifth to third to second before breaking her maiden by a head at 300 yards on May 29.
Moss then jumped her into stakes company at Retama Park on Aug. 5. In a furious duel to the wire of the 350-yard Colors of the Alamo Paint & Appaloosa Futurity, Apollos Second Sign, the Appaloosa D Railed, and the Paint DTL Samureye came to the wire together. Only two heads separated the three runners, with Apollos Second Sign finishing third.
At Will Rogers Downs on Sept. 16, Apollos Second Sign competed in the historic Cricket Bars Futurity for Appaloosas, a race that dates back to 1968 and is named for triple bronze medallion winner Cricket Bars. Sent away the even-money favorite and ridden by James Flores, Apollos Second Sign broke on top and led every step of the 350 yards. Second choice Ojo Por Ojo never let Apollos Second Sign get more than a head advantage, but Apollos Second Sign hung on to her lead tenaciously, winning in :18.025.
Apollos Second Sign finished the season at Lone Star Park. She won her trial to the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, and in the finals she finished third, and was moved up to second upon a disqualification.
With three wins, two seconds, and two thirds in eight starts, Apollos Second Sign also earned a bronze medallion for the season.
