  Canada Cup Futurity-RG3
KOOL SHAzOOM
by John Moorehouse
two longshots emerged as the horses to beat in the $67,362 Canada Cup Futurity-RG3. As the 350-yard race reached its endpoint, Kool Shazoom got to the finish line first by a head bob, earning black type in the third out of her career on Sept. 16 at Whoop Up Downs in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Kool Shazoom capped a fantastic futurity for trainer Laurie Ferguson, who saddled the top three finishers.
Kool Shazoom was a middle-of-the-pack qualifier for the Canada Cup Futurity with the sixth-fastest qualify- ing time of :18.150. A 13-1 underdog, Kool Shazoom was nearly two-tenths faster in the stakes final, finishing in :17.970 and posting a 90 speed index.
Jockey Logun Gotham brought Kool Shazoom out of the six gate and she continued
to gain ground on the early leader Miracle Recovery, the biggest longshot in the eight- horse field at 23-1. Kool Shazoom caught Miracle Recovery by a nose at the wire.
Kool Shazoom now has three wins in as many career starts. She broke her maiden in a 250-yarder at Grande Prairie, then won her trial for this futurity.
Shaun Jeffrey owns Kool Shazoom and reaped a $30,313 payday
for the filly’s victory, which increased her bankroll
to $33,529. Bred by the Highland Park Racing Partners, Kool Shazoom becomes the first stakes win- ner out of her dam, Paulina Bug. Paulina Bug is a stakes- placed mare who finished second in the 2007 Pot O’ Gold Futurity at Sun Downs and the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass. Ralph
Danard, who coincidentally also owns Miracle Recovery, owns Paulina Bug. The mare has three foals—one of which is a yearling—and Kool Shazoom is the only starter to date.
Miracle Recovery (Dean Miracle-Reckless Coin) finished second. Jockey Sheldon Chickeness drew the riding assignment.
KR Working Man (Captain Courage-KR Ladyhawk), the pre-race betting favorite and fastest qualifier, is owned by Phil Dennis and Jeremy and Naia Giambi. Jockey Juan Garcia was aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Miss Baileyscomet (Birdzilla-TB-A Judge), RD Genuine (Genuine Strawfly-Chicks Michele), Petes Fate (Quest Of Fate-TB-Bring The Roses), Secret Corvette (Mac Meyers-Rapid Secret) and Rocky Mountain Chick (Heza Fast Dash-Alumni Chick).

 James isaac Hobbs Stakes-G2
zuLu DRAGOn
by Michael Compton
Despite plenty of back class and hailing from an accomplished female family, Zulu Dragon paraded postward as a relative longshot
in the James Isaac Hobbs Stakes-G2 at Zia Park on Sept. 15. Following 350 yards in a sprightly :17.298, Zulu Dragon proved the depth of his class and notched his second career graded stakes victory under jockey Larry Gamez.
Zulu Dragon overcame a bump at the break and lugged in through mid-stretch, but held on for
the neck win, rewarding his
backers at odds of 10-1. Bred in New Mexico by
Rafter W Stables, Zulu Dragon is no stranger to the James Isaac Hobbs Stakes. He finished fifth in the race in 2009, ninth in the 2010 renewal and fourth in last year’s race. He also owns a second-place finish in the 2011 Mr Jet Moore Handicap-G3
at Ruidoso Downs and a
second in this year’s West Texas Maturity-G2
at Sunland Park. The 5-year-old sorrel horse’s recent win boosts his career bankroll to $163,509 for owner 21 Partnerships and trainer Eduardo Gonzalez. Zulu Dragon has now captured six of 26 starts, including two stakes, having also won the 2011 La Plata Stakes-G2.
Zulu Dragon has every right to be a top- class stakes horse. He is out Hidden Dragon,
winner of the 2003 New Mexican Spring Futurity-G1 and an earner of $165,347. Hidden Dragon has success- fully passed on her speed to her offspring. In addition
to Zulu Dragon, she has dropped Calif Fugitive, who was fourth in the 2008 All American Futurity-G1 and fifth in the 2009 Rainbow Derby-G1, and RC Black Mamba, who was third in this year’s Ruidoso Derby-G1.
Finishing second was early leader Tee Cos (Corona Cartel-Do It to It Reb) and jockey Jesse Levario. Paul Jones trains Tee Cos for owners Lyle Guillory and John Soileau. Jones also saddled JD Baccarat (Mr Jess Perry-Sizzling Lola), who closed late
to secure the show spot under rider Freddie Rodriguez. JD Baccarat is owned by the partnership of Cope, Herzog, Southway, Hubbard and Masterson.
Completing the order of finish behind the top three were Klassic Strawfly (Genuine Strawfly-A Classic Song), Double Chiseled (SC Chiseled In Stone-Specialy Double), Streaking Cherry (Streakin La Jolla-Cherry Creek Rose), Feature Ten (Feature Mr Jess- Shez Ten First), Hindsights Great (Separatist- Fly For Diamonds) and A Spring Snow (This Snow Is Royal-Lexines Legacy).
