noe Pena bought Lets Jess Do It for $9,000 as a yearling, and that investment is pay- ing off. The gelding has now earned $34,516
and became a stakes winner in capturing the Sept. 8 LQHBA Sale Invitational Stakes.
Lets Jess Do It’s trial for the rich LQHBA Sale Futurity didn’t yield any qualifiers. However, the first three finishers—T Boy C, Lets Jess Do It, and Chase N Alli—dominated the Invitational. Lets Jess
Do It broke well under John Hamilton and took charge immediately. T Boy C ran with him, while Chase N Alli closed from sixth. Lets Jess Do It drew off to win by a length, with Chase N Alli second and T Boy C third.
Lets Jess Do It raced
the 350 yards faster than Futurity winner Dashin Gage and clocked the dis- tance in :17.220, hand-timed,
for a 108 speed index. The LQHBA
Sale Invitational and the LQHBA Sale Futurity-RG1 were originally scheduled at
the Fair Grounds on Sept. 1, but were post- poned and moved to Evangeline when the Fair Grounds was evacuated and closed because of Hurricane Isaac.
Frank Cavazos took over Lets Jess Do It’s training for the Futurity trial. Previously, at
Louisiana Downs and Delta Downs, Lets Jess Do It won once, finished second once, and finished third twice in five career starts.
Easy Acres Performance Horses bred Lets Jess Do It in Louisiana and consigned him to the 2011 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling Sale, where Pena purchased him. Winner Lets Separate, a full sister to stakes-placed Steel
Separatist BR, produced Lets Jess Do It and one other winner from three starters.
Chase N Alli (Jet Black Patriot-Run Abby Run) was coming off three consecutive third- place finishes. Gilbert Ortiz piloted the filly for trainer Michael Zingelmann, who owns her in partnership with Patton Farms, Curtis Crenweige, and Shelly Zingelmann.
Jockey Raul Ramirez Jr. rode show fin- isher T Boy C (Sir Runaway Dash-Toast To Mallard) for owner Jose Guzman and trainer Miguel Rodriguez.
Completing the field were Hez Jess A Corona (King Corona-Shez Jess A Cutie), Ausmor Brees (Chick Happens-Ms Maggies First), Dee Magic Oak (Oak Tree Special- Magic Dashing Bye), and Pies Glory (Onthewingsofglory-Mosquito Pie). Chicharito Dash and Fishin With T were scratched.

 Black Gold 330 Futurity-RG3
OKLAHOMA CARteL
by John Moorehouse
the running of the Black Gold 330 Futurity, held Sept. 8 at Will Rogers Downs, demon- strated just how much a gate assignment can dictate the outcome of a race. As the horses broke from the gates, there was a traffic jam in the middle of the track. Oklahoma Cartel had drawn the outside gate in the eight-horse field, broke on top, stayed away from the trouble and rolled to a one-length victory in the $95,000 futurity.
Bred and owned by the Ellen Kennedy Living Trust, Oklahoma Cartel logged her second win in four outs. Her other win came in the trials to the Black Gold 330 Futurity, where she set the fourth-fastest qualifying time. In the finals, the filly’s inaugural stakes victory brought home a $38,304 payday, raising her earnings to a new total of $45,707.
Luis Villafranco trains
Oklahoma Cartel, who led at every call of the 330-yard event, and finished in :16.814 to tally a 95 speed index.
Juan Vazquez was aboard Oklahoma Cartel, who joined her dam, Pure Oklahoma, in black type. The 1994 mare won the Shebester Futurity-G3 at Blue Ribbon Downs, and ran in two other graded stakes races. Also owned by the Ellen Kennedy Living Trust,
Pure Oklahoma has foaled 10 offspring, with nine starters. Oklahoma Cartel becomes the third stakes winner, join- ing half-brothers Oklahoma Bandido and Adios My Amigos. Adios My Amigos holds three stakes wins, and is the top earner with more than $232,000 in prize money. Oklahoma Bandido’s bankroll also is in six digits, and his record includes a victory in the 2010 Speedhorse Gold &
Silver Cup Derby-G3 at Fair Meadows. Heza Valiant Warrior (Valiant Hero-
Enticilizeur), the pre-race favorite, finished second by a neck for Wayne Wood and Clarence Pruitt. The Stacey Capps trainee had Berkley Packer in the irons.
Mapricel (PYC Paint Your Wagon-A Chic Dash), the second-fastest qualifier, placed third for J and B Rental. Kevin Willis is the trainer and Cody Smith did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was Colby Cartel (Teller Cartel-Show Me The Wire),
A Southern High KI (Southern First-
The Honeymoons Over), Diamond Prize (Shazoom-First Prize Diamond), Paint Candy Flying (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Fly Candy Fly) and CS Southern Sweetnes (Southern First-A Dash Of Sweetness). Fastest qualifier JB James and SS Calendar Girl were scratched.
