Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3
MARYS CORONITAS
by Tracy Gantz
Jorge Mendoza is a one-man army when
it comes to Marys Coronitas. He bred the filly in Oklahoma, owns her, and trains her. That made victory even sweeter when she stormed home victorious in the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3 on Challenge Championship night Nov. 7. Once the gate opened in the 400-yard Derby, Marys Coronitas
sped to the lead under jockey Juan Garcia Jr. They hustled to the front, and Marys Coronitas had plenty of speed to hold off closers and win by 1/2-length in :19.603.
Marys Coronitas qualified for Challenge Championship night in the Aug. 8 Adequan Retama Derby Challenge. She had finished second, but was
subsequently awarded the victory after the first-place finisher was disqualified.
Mendoza then put the filly in the trials for the Dash For Cash Derby-G3. She qualified the fastest, with a :21.422 time for the 440 yards. But Mendoza said Marys Coronitas bled and had to miss the final. The time off proved just the ticket, as Marys Coronitas returned for
her Derby win. Mendoza bred Marys
Coronitas from Inbetween Dances, a Joe Kirk Fulton- bred mare who started only once in her career.
Inbetween Dances has produced five winners from eight starters, including graded stakes-placed Zoomin For Mary.
Political Debut (Apollitical Jess-Sizzling
Lola), finished second with Agustin Silva up. Angel Sanchez trains the filly for the Garza Laurel Partnership, LLC.
Santos Carrizales rode Jumpn Streak (Jumpn Chic-Juanas Streak) to third for trainer Josue Ponce and owner Ovidio Sandoval.
Completing the field were Seize The Win (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess An Illusion), Ynot Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Ynot Bar), Great Grace (Apollitical Jess-Reloaded And Ready), AJs High (Apollitical Jess-Regally Rare),
Rare Scheme (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Rarest Daisy), James First Affair (Ivory James-Fancys First Affair), Bye Bye Birdy (Hawkinson-Sweet Bye And Bye), & Wrap You Up (Walk Thru Fire-Babe On The Fly).

by Danny Camp
The 350-yard John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 was worth $151,500 with 11 proven fast two year olds lined up
for the running on Nov. 7. There was much bumping in the middle of the track and the stewards had their work cut out for them. Stepping away from the 3-post was Careless Lightning. He didn’t break very fast, however getting the 7th call from the
3-hole. Larry Payne who was in the saddle, showed his maturity and sat and waited for the first 100 yards, then asked for speed. His request was granted and they crossed the line 1/2-length in front.
According to the jockey, “That’s the way this horse runs. He breaks slow and runs fast on the end. I had a lot left in the tank.”
They stopped the clock at :17.610, earning a speed index of 93. With a first place check worth $69,000, the gelding has now earned $150,219 and has a race record of 4 wins out of 6 races, winning his lastfour in a row.
