All American Congress Mat.
ZOOM N CRASH
by Danny Camp
It must have been a lightning fast track at Belterra Park on Oct. 11 for the running of the All American Congress Maturity, as nine out of the 10
finishers earned over a 100 speed index.
Zoom N Crash was the fastest of them all with
a 122 speed index, stopping the clock at :21.096 for the 440-yard dash.
The nine-year-old gelding was third from the nine-hole and came thundering down the lane with jockey Angel Stanley riding hard. They were fifth at the first call and in the lead at the top of the stretch. Zoom N Crash finished 1 1/4-lengths to the good in a driving finish.
The total purse for the All American Congress was worth $20,050 and the first place money was $12,030. With that check, Zoom N Crash has now earned $67,725 and has a race record of seven wins out of 33 tries. More importantly he has won three out of his last four starts.
Zoom N Crash is owned by Margarito Sanchez, trained by Cruz Sanchez, and was bred in Oklahoma by Chuck & Terryll Griffeth.
The gelding is out of Crashin Bac, who owns a 101 speed index herself. She won the 2002 Bellflower Handicap and finished third in the Huntington Beach Handicap and the Stanton Handicap.
The mare has produced two starters, both win- ners and Register of Merit earners. Zoom N Crash
is Crashin Bac’s first stakes winner as well as her leading money earner. Beside his first stakes win in this All American Congress Maturity, Crashin Bac has second place finishes in the 2011 and 2013 Don Boyd Memorial Handicap and a third place finish in the 2010 Pepsi Bonus Challenge.
After looking at the finish photo, the stewards determined that Tortuga Tony (Stel Corona-Just Wanna Be Me) was the second place finisher. His con- nections include owner Antonio Valdez and trainer Jesus Gonzalez Jr. Jose Beltran was handling the reins.
Third place money went to Luminaro (Separatist-Quick Moon Sign), who made up a lot of ground after the break for owner Rosa Olivo and trainer Tim Eggleston. Smitty Oxendine picked up the riding assignment.
Followed by Free Stater (Separatist-Free Bird Fly TB), Well Worth It (Carters Cartel-Worth A Look), Braggs Hero (Valiant Hero-Trickie Lassie), Bigtime Feature (Feature Mr Jess-Royal Miss Della), Shamu Moon (Shazoom-Secret Six Moons), Dashin For Corona (Teller Cartel-Curls Girl), & My Corona Is Rare (Corona For Me-Mynewsensation).
Far West Futurity
SKOLD
by Danny Camp
Patience is a virtue. Owners want to see a return on their investment and sometimes it can be hard to wait for that return.
Owner Hayden Brothers Ranch had the patience
to wait, however, and didn’t start Skold until the Far West Futurity trials on Oct. 15. Their patience, and that of trainer Hector Magallanes, was rewarded with a 3/4-length trial victory for the fastest qualify- ing time to the finals.
Skold was the 2-1 favorite going into the Oct. 26 Far West Futurity finals, but when he broke from the number 8-post, things didn’t look very good. Skold was bumped around with the number nine horse and the 2-year-old black gelding was 1/2-length back at the first call.
Jake Samuels, who was in the saddle, waited until his mount gathered himself and then the jockey went to work. Encouraging, hustling, and riding hard, the pair dueled to the wire and crossed the finish a nose in front to make this two wins in a row for the team and a perfect race record for Skold.
The gelding stopped the clock at :18.274 for the 350-yard Far West Futurity, earning a speed index of 86, shy of the 90 speed index he earned in his trial heat. There was a total purse of $27,900 for the race and the winner earned $11,160, increasing Skold’s bankroll to $12,860.
Skold was bred in Oregon by Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch & Racing and is out of Copa Show Girl, who earned $42,475, was second in the Grade 1 Retama Park Derby and a finalist in two additional graded stakes events.
The mare has produced nine starters and six win- ners, including two stakes winners. Warnock is her only other stakes winner and highest money earner with a win in the 2011 Baxter Andruss Oregon Bred Futurity and $34,641 in earnings.
Stella Corona (Stel Corona-Yak Ity Yak) gave it a great effort to finish in second place. Her connec- tions include owner Jeff Ray and trainer Roddina A. Barrett. Jorge Rosales was in the saddle.
Ez Feisty Patriot (Game Patriot-Easy Verna) stepped away in great shape and finished in third place under Javier Matias. Her team includes owner Gary Chumbley and trainer Scott Raley.
Followed by DC Lady Juno (Gol-Junomore), Shez Sneakin Fast (Heza Fast Dash-Sneak Bac), One Runaway Opener (One Sweet Jess-Runaway Eye Opener), FNFBad Kitty (Fastnfierce-Foxy Speeder), CM Secretsinthestraw (No Secrets Here-Im Special Star), & Critic (Separatist-Shes Sweet N Can Fly).
Markel Enerpan Bonus Chal.
IM HOTT UR NOTT
by John Moorehouse
Im Hott Ur Nott was blazing fast on Oct. 7, win- ning the $18,572 Markel Enerpan Bonus Challenge at Northlands Park. The five-year-old mare com-
pleted the 330-yard stakes in :16.556, surpassing the standing track record at 330 yards, and tallied a career-best 111 speed index.
Laurie Ferguson trains Im Hott Ur Nott, who had Trevor Simpson aboard for the mare’s second career stakes victory. Both have come this year; she also won the Evergreen Park Distaff Challenge back in July.
The mare veered out breaking from the inside starting gate, but Simpson quickly recovered and had her in front by a length at the first call. Im Hott Ur Nott widened the gap to 1 1/2-lengths by the time she entered the stretch and held off a furious rally by Tiny Flying Corona to reach the line first by a neck.
Ralph Danard owns Im Hott Ur Nott, whose career bankroll increased to $71,488 with the addi- tion of the $9,843 prize from this stakes.
Dean Frey bred Im Hott Ur Nott and owns
her dam, Wild California Rose, who had a winless racing career before becoming a broodmare. She has four foals, three of whom have made starts. While all three are winners, Im Hott Ur Nott is the only member of the brood who holds a stakes victory.
Tiny Flying Corona (Tinys First Corona-PJ Phoebes Flying), the pre-race favorite, finished a strong second for owner Charles Stojan and trainer William Leech. Ricardo Moreno drew the riding assignment. Pow Wow Lane (Invisible Injun-Cash In This Lane) placed third. The gelding is owned by Herds Racing and trained by Donalda Cochrane. Neil Husbands was aboard.Followed by HRH Burning Corona (Coronas Leaving You-Whatalovelywaytoburn),
BD Cruiser (Separatist-Streakin Debut), Streaken Timber (First Timber-Streakin Jordash) & Fast Fifty (Promised Class-Bubbles La Jolla). SLS Vedette and Wave Rocker scratched.
