Classic Oscar Leos Allande Selecta Auction Futurity
SENOR CAWBOY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Asunny afternoon changed to torrential rain and therefore a fast track status went to muddy and waterlogged for the 15 qualify- ing races that were held on Sept. 6, with the participation of 135 two year olds in order to obtain the fastest 20 individuals at 350 yards. The first 10 advanced to the final and the next 10 to the consolation. All of them were presented at the Selecta Auction Sale in 2014 and their owners paid the respective participa- tion quotas.
Three weeks later, only eight of the quali- fiers returned after Fearless Corina and Dash To Horse were withdrawn. All of the remain- ing eight and their teams worked towards the objective of winning the futurity with the most money and prestige for Quarter Horses at the Hipodromo de las Americas. The odds at first widely favored the gelding Im Native Princess and the colt Senor Cawboy, which qualified with times of :17.33 and :17.22 seconds respec- tively, winning their respective trials.
In the finals, Set Sambaso lost his balance at the initial start, being cast at a disadvantage, while El Japones was contacted by Ferdy Ruby without serious consequences. The rest of the group broke clean and the battle began in
the sand, headed by Im Native Princess until Senor Cawboy settled in the middle of the track and with his powerful stride left his foe in the back without any problems. From the right side of the track, Daver made a remark- able effort that paid off by capturing second place, 1 1/2-lengths behind Senor Cawboy. For a moment, it seemed we would see the repeat of the qualifying race of the new champion, winning by 5-lengths.
Senor Cawboy completed the 350 yards in :17.09 (SI 100) under the leadership of Martin Hernandez Bautista. This triumph convened a crowd of fans to the awards in the winner’s circle, with the presence of Pedro Zamora, the horse’s owner, and Jose Ravel Baltazar, his trainer. Mr. Zamora said excitedly, “When we selected the colt in the auction, we liked his conformation but also his cheerful character, very much alive.” On his future, he said that he will continue racing at the Hipodromo de las Americas.
At the auction in 2014, Senor Cawboy held the lot number 306 and was bid at 205,000 pesos (US $15,770 approximately). He debuted on June 7, but it wasn’t until his fourth attempt on July 26 that he won his maiden by 3 1/4-lengths. His second victory was on Sept. 6 in the qualifiers of this futurity, so his record
consists of three first places in six starts.
The total purse col-
lected for this Futurity
was 3,636,000 pesos (US $219,844 approximately) with 2,560,950 pesos ($154,843 US, approximately) rewarded to the owners of the 10 final- ists (the remainder going to the consolation), of which 1,280,475 pesos (US $77,422 approximately) went to the earnings of Senor Cawboy.
The colt was bred in Cuadra La Presita in Culiacan, Sinaloa. He is a son of the stallion Senior Solo (by Mr Jess Perry) and out of the mare Takin Cash SLC (by Takin On The Cash). Senior Solo
is a winner of 3 races and $86,095, with a third
in the Southern California Derby-G1, and he was finalist in the Los Alamitos Super Derby, Ed Burke Memorial Futurity and PCQHRA Breeders Derby. He is the sire of the placed Only With Time, Senior BN, Larana and Venado Love. His dam, Takin Cash SLC, garnered two first and two third places, as well as dividends of $8,576. Of her three runners, Senor Cawboy is the first clasico winner.
The race took the name of the horseman and breeder Oscar Leos Allande since the colt
PB El Cirujano, bred by him in his Rancho Palos Blancos in Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, won this futurity in 2014.
Second place went to Daver, a son of He Be Jess Special out of Cafeina (by Aguerrido) under the leader- ship of Juan Carlos Alvarado for Cuadra El Renacimiento and trainer Adam Romo Hernandez. A finalist in the
Mexico and Stallion futurities, he was bred by Justo Fernandez F.
Im Native Princess (Native Cartel - Princess Tenaya) took third under the command of Eddi Cuellar for the Cuadra Super Cuaco and trainer Martin Leopoldo Galán. He is a winner of the consolation of the Stallion’s Futurity and was bred by José Francisco García Campos.
Fourth to eighth concluded as follows: El Japonés (Danny Cartel – To Chickuma), Set Sambaso (Sambaso Dancer – Jet Settin Jessie), Ferdy Ruby (Tres Ruby – Super Fer TB), Furia Aguerrida (Aguerrido – Mr Furia Race TB) & La Beduina Cartel (Danny Cartel – Beduina Aguerrida).
