Routh. He was undefeated in four races and beat such horses as Marske, who was the sire of Eclipse, the grand sire of Waxy, the sire of Whalebone and his siblings.
Snap was sired by Snip, a grandson of the Darley Arabian. Snap was the leading sire four times from 1767 to 1769 and in 1771. He was noted for his great power and was known by the phrase “Snap for Speed.” Snap was also known for his good daughters.
Blank is the third cog in our wheel. Foaled in 1740, he was bred by Francis
the second Earl of Godolphin, and he was sired by the Godolphin Arabian - one of the original foundation sires. Blank was out of Amorette by Bartlet’s Childer by the Darley Arabian. His dam was known as
the Hartley Mare. Blank was a full brother to Janus. This Janus was the sire of a son named Janus that was imported to America and became the foundation sire for the Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse, or as we know them today as the American Quarter Horse.
The line breeding to the Herod/Snap/ Blank cross found in Whalebone, Whisker, and Web gets started with the dam of their sire Waxy. Waxy was out of Maria by Herod. The dam of Maria was Lisette by Snap - our first encounter with the Herod/Snap nick.
The dam of Whalebone, Web and Whisker was Penelope, who was sired by Trumpator by Conductor. Conductor was out of a daughter of Snap. The dam of Penelope was Prunella by Highflyer by Herod. High Flyer was out of Rachel by Blank. This makes Highflyer a Herod/Blank cross.
Prunella was out of Promise by Snap. Her dam was Julia and she was sired by Blank. This makes Prunella a Snap/Blank cross. This gives our three siblings a line breeding pattern to the Herod/Snap/Blank cross. It is interesting to note how these crosses come through the dam’s side of the pedigree.
The Herod, Snap, Blank Influence on Whalebone Sons Sir Hercules was out of Peri. She was a
daughter of Wanderer by Gohanna, who was out of a daughter of Herod and the dam of Wanderer was Catherine by Woodpecker, a son of Herod.
The dam of Peri was Thalestris by Alexander. The dam of Thalestris was Rival by Sir Peter Teazle. The pedigree of Rival is the interesting part of our look at the Herod/ Snap/Blank cross.
Sir Peter Teazle, or Sir Peter as he was known on the racetrack, won such stakes as the Derby Stakes and the Prince of Wales Stakes. He raced from age three to five. He broke down as a five year old. Sir Peter Teazle was a 10-time leading sire, siring such good runners as Sir Solomon, Stamford and Sir Harry.
The sire of Sir Peter Teazle was Highflyer by Herod and out of a Blank daughter. The dam of Sir Peter Teazle was Papillion by Snap. This makes Sir Teazle a product of the Herod/Snap/Blank cross.
Rival was out of Hornet by Drone, who was sired by Herod and out of a Blank mare. Manilla was the dam of Hornet. She was sired by Goldfinder by Snap and out of a Blank daughter. This shows us that
the pedigree of Sir Hercules was highly influenced by the Herod/Snap/Blank cross.
Camel was the second son of Whalebone we looked at. Camel was out of a mare by Selim, who was sired by Buzzard by Woodpecker by Herod. Buzzard was out of Misfortune, who was of out of Curiosty by Snap.
Selim was out of the Alexander Mare, who was out of a Highflyer mare. (Highflyer by Herod and out of a Blank mare.) The Highflyer mare was out of an Alfred mare, who was a daughter of Snap.
The dam of the Selim mare was Maiden by Sir Peter Teazle. Maiden was out of
a Phenomenon Mare by Phenomenon. Phenonmenon was sired by Herod and his
The power of the blood of Whalebone, Whisker and Web is, without a doubt, a great influence on the Quarter Horse and the Thoroughbred.
third dam in the tail female line was a Blank mare. The Phenomenon Mare was out of Matron by Florizel by Herod.
Waverly was another son of Whalebone we have profiled here. He was sired by Whalebone and out of Margaretta by Sir Peter Teazle. The dam of Margaretta was a Highflyer Mare by Highflyer.
One of the key individuals we have look at through Waverly was Don John, the paternal grandsire of Bonnie Scotland. Don John was out of the Comus Mare. Her sire was Comus, who was out of Houghton Lass by Sir Peter Teazle. The dam of the Comus Mare was Maricana by Stamford by Sir Peter Teazle. The dam of Marciana was Marcia by Coriander. Coriander was out of Lavender by Herod and she was out of a Snap Mare by Snap. The dam of Marcia was Faith by Pacolet by Blank.
Authors Note: We could add more here with Bonnie Scotland and several more ties to the Herod/Snap/Blank nick. We could do the same with *Glencoe, as he carried more crosses to this significant nick.
The power of the blood of Whalebone, Whisker and Web is, without a doubt, a great influence on the Quarter Horse and the Thoroughbred. That power is shown in the pedigree records. This power, or ability to become an influence, was built on the cross of many great foundation horses. However, a major part of this foundation comes with the Herod/Snap/Blank cross or nick.
