Bettors who overlooked Corona By Corona missed out as the talented gelding, condi- tioned by multiple Champion trainer Paul Jones,
captured the $20,000 Holiday Handicap at Los Alamitos on Dec. 29.
Corona By Corona broke in third under jockey Carlos Huerta, but quickly grabbed the lead. They dueled with Moon Me Blue and Purty Fancy Dude throughout, crossing the wire 1/2-length in front.
The gelding completed the 350 yards in :17.710, posting a career-best 91 speed index.
Owner Keith Nellesen bred the gelding with Lance Robinson in the name of McColee Land & Livestock LLC. Corona By Corona had won twice previously in eight starts and ran second in the Ed Burke Memorial Juvenile. He now has a race record of 9-3(1)-3(1)-0. The $11,000 winner’s share pushed the gelding’s earnings to $27,265.
McColee Land & Livestock LLC bred Corona By Corona out of 6-time winner Louisana Corona, who won the 2014 Juno’s Request Stakes-G2 and Mother’s Day Stakes. She has produced 100% money earners from six starters, including Ruidoso Futurity-G1 finalist and top earner Corona Squared. Corona By Corona is her first stakes winner.
Thomas Bradbury and Lila Kessinger’s Purty Fancy Dude (Corona Cartel-Fancys First Affair) was second under Jesus Ayala for trainer Mike Casselman. Bail Czech (Corona Czech-Letty Bail Regis Out)
ran third under Alberto Zepeda for owner EG High Desert Farms and trainer Jesus Nunez.
Silver Jet Dash (Bodacious Dash-Fancy Smoking Jet), Striver (Foose-Motherless), Moon Me Blue (First Moonflash-Viva La Blue), Bolt For Gold (Favorite Cartel-Sheza Hot Catch), Mommas Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Bye Sweet Girl) and Singles Cruise (Favorite Cartel-Going Single) completed the order of finish.
