Mexican Breeders Futurity
DANNY COOL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The Mexican Breeders Futurity is the only two-year-old race for Mexican-bred foals
run at 400 yards at the Hipódromo de Las Américas. The Dec. 2 trials had 38 entrants, from which the ten finalists and the same number of participants for the Consolation race were obtained.
The final was two weeks later among nine runners, as the filly Feature Horse from Cuadra San Pedro scratched. The purse for the futurity was $1,739,760 pesos (approx. $85,062 US) to be distributed from first to fifth place. The colt LA Rapid King Judea was the favorite and was the fastest qualifier (:19.432). He previously won the Selecta Auction Futurity, where he dominated the powerful AS Macho.
At the start of this race, LA Rapid Dove moved inward, limiting the space of Centurion D Master, and Espejo Misionero was bumped by LA Rapid King Judea on his left flank. From the 1 gate the sorrel filly Danny Cool came off surprisingly quickly, taking the lead with authority under the command of José
Ángel Ambrosio Medina. LA Rapid King Judea ran through the center of the track under Francisco Javier Fernández.
These two runners set the pace of the race until the end of the 400 yards, where at first glance it was not possible to
distinguish a winner. While
the verdict was determined,
horses and horsemen spent
several minutes walking
before the expectant crowd.
The photo-finish revealed Danny Cool as the winner by thousandths of a second (in the chart they both appear with a time of :19.58 and a speed index of 95), for the good of the team, who were overjoyed to take the photo of the victory.
It should be noted that in this race the filly won against the LA Rapid King Judea, despite the fact that in the qualifying race the colt
beat the filly by 3/4-length, with Danny Cool coming in second place in :19.528, the fourth fastest time.
This win was the first classic victory for Danny Cool, after having tried in the previous
four futurities reserved for Mexican-bred runners. Her record now stands with three wins in 10 appearances. She won her maiden and qualify- ing race to the finals of the Garañones Futurity, where she placed sixth.
Cuadra La Presita bred Danny Cool by Danny Cartel and out of One Cool by Separatist Jr. The filly sold
in the 2017 Selecta Yearling Auction (Lot 255) for $460,000 pesos ($25,767 US)
and was the ninth highest seller. Danny Cool was purchased by Rancho El Suspiro, whom she has represented on the race track.
