produced such great horses as Skipper W and Skipper’s King. When Rukin String was bred to HJ Skippa, a daughter of Skipper W, he got Skippa String, a stakes winning racehorse who won the 1960 Nursery Handicap and 1962 Bright Eyes Handicap. Skippa String became an important sire for Wiescamp.
Gunny Sack by Piggin String is the second stakes winner out of Queenie. This bay gelding won the 1954 Rocky Mountain QHA Derby, was third in the 1953 Rocky Mountain Futurity and third in the 1954 Las Vegas Stakes. His record shows 36 starts with five wins, five seconds and six thirds. He earned $6,457.
Queen O’ Clubs J is the third foal out of Queenie that was sired by Piggin String. She is a stakes placed runner with a second in the 1951 Southwestern Futurity and a third in the 1951 Baby Stakes. Queen O’ Clubs J is the dam of 12 foals with seven starters that earned 4 ROM and $16,496. Her leading money earner is Royal Bar at $8,717 from 22 starts with 3 wins, 5 seconds and 1 third.
A daughter of Queen O’ Clubs J named Miss Widow was a second-place finisher in her two starts. She went on to be a broodmare, and her foals include Double Dibs. This gelding placed in 12 stakes races, winning two of them. He won the 1969 Double Bid Handicap and the 1970 Clabbertown G Handicap, and was second in five more stakes including the 1968 Rainbow Derby, 1969 Go Josie Go Handicap and 1970 Go Man Go Handicap. He also had five thirds, including the 1967 Los Alamitos Futurity.
Double Queen is a stakes winning full sister to Miss Widow. She won the 1964 Rainbow Futurity. Double Queen is now an AQHA Dam of Distinction and her foals include Duplicate Bid, winner of the 1971 Sun Country Futurity; Twin Jet, winner of the 1977 Z Wayne Griffin Director’s Stakes; and the multiple stakes winning mare Vim And Vigor, winner of the 1975 All American Derby. Vim And Vigor is the all-time leading money earning foal by Go Man Go. Her earnings were $310,204. Dynago Queen is a race winning daughter of Double Queen, and is the dam of 1982 Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding Dynago Victory. He won the 1984 Mr Jet Moore Handicap and was second in 1982 Sun Country Futurity and 1982 Kindergarten Futurity.
When Bill Horton owned Queenie, he bred her to Joe Reed II, producing Joe Queen in 1952. The colt was owned for a number
of years by Audie Murphy, the famous World
War II hero and movie star who also owned Queenie for a while.
Joe Queen ran 31 races with eight wins, including two stakes wins in the 1955 RMQHA World Dash and the 1956 Tonta Gal Handicap. He earned $13,307. He sired 42 race starters with 18 earning their ROM. Joe Queen sired two stakes winners and one stakes placed runner, including Queenie Charge, winner of the 1972 Evangeline Downs 440 Championship and 1972 All American QH Congress Championship.
Joe Sherry, the other stakes winner by Joe Queen, is a legend in Quarter Horse racing. He had 59 starts with 18 wins, 9 seconds and 4 thirds, earning $43,220. He won 11 stakes races, including the 1966 Barbra B Handicap, 1963 Los Ninos Handicap and 1966 Express Stakes.
The races that made Joe Sherry a legend came in the La Mesa Park All Distance Series in 1965. This set was made up of seven races. Joe Sherry missed the first one due to an injury, but was entered in races #2 through #7. These six races were run at 220, 300, 330, 350, 400 and 440 yards, and he won
all of them. He set track records - for 220 in :11.830 and for 440 in :21.500. The win in the 440 was a World Record, as no Quarter Horse had ever covered the distance as fast
as Joe Sherry did that day. Joe Sherry was named the 1963 Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding, 1965 AQHA Champion Gelding, 1965 AQHA Champion Aged Gelding and 1966 Champion Aged Gelding.
The stakes placed runner by Joe Queen is Chisolm, a full-brother to Joe Sherry. He was second in the 1977 Nichols Handicap and the 1976 Marathon Stakes Series #3.
The last stakes placed runner out of Queenie is Miss Queenie by Depth Charge. She was third in the 1960 PCQHRA Futurity and PCQHRA California-Bred Futurity. Sadly, this mare had no foals. The other ROM runners out of Queenie were Little Queeny, her fourth foal by Piggin String; Bond Issue by Bymeabond; and Alliance by Alumnus. From this group, Bond Issue became the broodmare sire of 1988 Champion Aged Stallion Bully Bullion, the sire of money earners with earnings of over $8.9 million. Bully Bullion is also a noted broodmare sire of runners, and he has been an influence in barrel racing.
Owned by the famous actor and decorated World War II hero Audie Murphy, Joe Queen (shown) is by Joe Reed II and out of Queenie.
Bob won again, and Hebert was so impressed that he told Noah, “Your colt had to be flying, old sport,” and Bob became Flying Bob.

The AQHA officially lists the race record for Queenie as nine starts with six wins, three thirds and only one stakes placed finish. But, the 1946 AQRA Year Book credits her with 14 starts, eight wins, three second and two thirds.
J. Rukin Jelks bought Queenie just before she won the 1945 Tucson World Championship. The purchase by Jelks, the owner of Piggin String TB, would lead to Queenie becoming a broodmare. Queenie produced 10 foals, nine starters, eight ROM, three stakes winners and two stakes placed runners. Her foals earned $72,294.
The move by Jelks to buy Queenie was good for his program. She produced four foals by Piggin’ String, including three stakes horses. The leading money earner from this cross was Rukin String, who earned $21,894 while running 30 times with 15 wins, 4 seconds and 3 thirds.
He placed first, second or third in 13 stakes races, winning 8 of them. Rukin String won the 1952 Central Bar And Grill Futurity, the 1953 Rillito Championship and the 1954 Barbra B Handicap. He was the 1952 Champion 2-Year- Old Colt, the 1953 Champion Stallion and the 1954 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt.
Rukin String was leased by Hank Wiescamp in 1955 and 1956 as an outcross for his Old Fred breeding program, which had
