Former LQHBA President Paul Ryder passed away at the age of 85. Ryder was one of
the founding
members of the
Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association, served as President of the LQHBA and was employed there as the out-of-state mare inspector until his passing.
August 25
1996 sorrel stallion Bono Jazz (Jazzing Hi-Pro Bono) died. Owned by Doug Allen DVM, Bono Jazz won nine of 22 starts, including four stakes events earning $316,124. A leading sire, his top performer is 2004 World Champion Be A Bono.
August 28 AQHA Director Emeritus Col. Earl A. Lilley, of Idaho, passed away at the age
of 97. Lilley
served in the
Air Force
for 28 years,
received the
Distinguished
Flying Cross for heroic bravery and retired as a Colonel in the Air Force. A longtime Quarter Horse breeder and owner, Lilley served as president of the Idaho Horse Council, was an active member of the AQHA Racing Committee and attended the AQHA Convention for 50 years. In 2008, he was honored with the Merle Wood Humanitarian award from the AQHA.

Prairie Meadows inducted three longtime racing department employees into the Prairie Meadows Hall of Fame: Vice President of Racing Derron Heldt, Track Superintendent Lamont Marks, and Starter Tom Benjamin.
August 20
Eight jockeys competing at The Downs of Albuquerque, accompanied by Track Chaplain Donald Stover, visited children and distributed gifts at the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital. The jockeys who attended were Porfirio Cano, Victor Escobar, Don French, Reyes Gomez, Gustavo Herrera, Mckenzie King, Jansen Melancon and Jorge Rocha.
The Canterbury Park Hall of Fame Committee Class of 2018 inductee ceremony honored jockey Dean Butler, Minnesota HBPA President and racehorse owner/breeder Jack Walsh, Quarter Horse breeders Rodney & Sylvia Von Ohlen, and retired Minnesota-bred Thoroughbred racehorse Heliskier.
