  November 15
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino named two key officials for their 60th live racing season. Gerald Richards has been employed for two years as the Downs at Albuquerque Racing Secretary, where he helped increase field size and handle. For the past three years, he has been active as the chief chart caller at Sunland Park for the Equibase Company. In 2016,
he received full accreditation for the Racing Officials Program and is a Level Three Steward. With over 40 years’ experience, Johnnie Jamison took over as Track Superintendent
as well as Head Starter. Starting over 20,000 races, Jamison also designed and installed
the track surface at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino, and was Sunland Park’s superintendent from 1997 to 2000.
November 16
Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame member Johnny T.L. Jones passed away. Jones was a prominent member of the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred industries in many capacities, as a trainer, breeder, owner, and was the head of Walmac International from 1976 to 2005. Jones bred and owned Ochoa in the name of
J Bar 7 Ranch LLC. A 4-time Champion with $2,781,365 in earnings and AQHA’s all-time leading money earner, Ochoa won the 2011 All American Futurity-G1 and three additional Grade 1 stakes.
November 17
Four-time Champion sire Mr Eye Opener (Dash For Cash-Bedawee) died at the age of 28. Owned by Dee & Betty Raper, the stallion won nine races from 15 starts with earnings of $202,978. Mr Eye Opener is the sire of 13 Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Champions with earnings of nearly $29 million from 22 crops raced.
November 19
Johnnie Jamison was hired as track superintendent at Canterbury Park. Jamison brings more than 40 years of experience to the Minnesota track, holding similar roles at tracks in Texas, New Mexico and Indiana, and served as track superintendent for Palm Meadows and general superintendent for the Stronach Group’s tracks in Florida.
December 10-11
The Jockey’s Guild Annual Assembly was held at Top Golf in Las Vegas, Nevada. The gathering of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse riders from across the country focused on current issues of importance to the members, including health, safety, insurance updates, and any other issues pertaining to jockeys.
December 12
Congress passed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (H.R.2). According to an American Horse Council release, horse industry highlights in the bill include a revised statutory definition that excludes equines from a blanket definition of “pets,” as well as funding for key livestock and international market development programs through
Fiscal Year 2023. The bill will help preserve the long-standing classification of horses as “livestock,” while allowing equines to fall within the scope of property damage subject to compensation within the parameters of the PAWS (Pet And Women Safety) Act.
December 13-14
AQHA Chief Racing Officer Janet VanBebber, Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association Executive Director Debbie Schauf, Donna McArthur, Robyne Draper, Bonnie Vessels, Jo Burns and Shirley Schvaneveldt were honored at the Wrangler World of Rodeo Reunion and Gold Card Gathering in Las Vegas. The event celebrated famous women of pro rodeo, the horse industry and the West. There was also a conference and symposium, with a panel discussion overseen by VanBebber and including experts such as Schauf, Ruidoso Downs president and general manager
Jeff True, AQHA all-time leading trainer Paul Jones, and AQHA Racing Committee Chairman Mark Brown.
