Canterbury Park Racetrack hired Matt Crawford to be its director of racing and racing secretary. Crawford currently is the manager of racing operations and racing secretary at Zia Park in New Mexico, and racing secretary at Sam Houston Race Park
in Texas. He began his career in horse racing in 1976 as an assistant trainer before going on to train horses at his own stable for 10 years. He will begin his new position at Canterbury Park in April 2019.

Los Alamitos wrapped up its 149-night meet, with increases in single night handle, all-sources handle, and out-of-state simulcast handle. Dr. Ed Allred was named the leading Quarter Horse owner, Paul Jones was the leading Quarter Horse trainer for the 20th time, and the leading Quarter Horse jockey was Jesus Rios Ayala.

A total of $15,000 was presented to six recipients of the LQHBA Scholarship Fund at Evangeline Downs. The students will be able to further
their education in 2019 with the scholarships courtesy of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association, which acknowledged the support
of Hart Farms, Robicheaux Ranch and Knorpp Bloodstock Insurance Agency. Recipients included Gena Daigle, Kaelyn Moore, Jace Gilbert, Jaxon Dugas, Sage Bischoff and Lauren Thomas. Over $570,000 has been earmarked for the program since its inception in 2001.

Keith Nellesen, owner of 2017 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt KVN Corona, has created an incentive program for individuals breeding their mares to the stallion in his first year at stud in 2019 a chance to win a portion of a $125,000 bonus. The program includes bonus money paid to the breeder, owner and trainer of any 2 year old sired by KVN Corona’s first crop that wins any AQHA Grade 1 stakes race in 2022. The stallion will stand at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

S-Quarter K LLC decided to retire 2015 World Champion Heza Dasha Fire after his 7th-place finish in the Champion of Champions. Only one of three Quarter Horses to have earned over $2.2 million on the track, the 6-year-old gelding retires with a record of 16 wins from 25 starts and earnings of $2,240,112. “We have to do what’s right for the horses. He’s given us his all for five years,” said S-Quarter K’s Don Meneely of Heza Dasha Fire, who has been dealing with issues related to Leptospirosis.
