  Sam Houston Distance Chall.
BOK MAN
by Tracy Gantz
Owners, trainers, and jockeys can seem like family sometimes, and in the case of Bok Man, they really are. When the gelding won the April 28
Red Cell Sam Houston Distance Challenge, Jeff Jerman rode him for his parents, owner Cynthia Jerman and trainer Jerry Jerman.
Odds-on favorite Kite Flyer and second-choice Mysterious Streaker flew to the front early in the 870-yard race, with Bok Man third. Those two seemed to have it all their own way around the turn and into the stretch. However, Jeff Jerman angled Bok Man inside, coming up the rail to grab the win by a half-length in :45.791.
Bok Man didn’t win his first race until his second attempt at 870 yards. Since then, he had finished second twice and third once at 870 yards. With this victory, he qualified for the Oct. 27 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship-G2.
Patty and Bryan McDonald bred Bok Man
in Texas from the Thoroughbred mare One Fine Devon. In addition to Bok Man, the mare has
one stakes-placed winner from two reported Thoroughbred foals and one reported Quarter Horse foal. Bok Man is the first stakes winner for his sire, the stakes-winning Mr Jess Perry son Boknaai.
Kite Flyer (Royal Quick Dash-Cymbidiam) finished second for jockey Santos Carrizales and trainer Ryan Basham. Owned by the Dark Horse Partnership, Kite Flyer won the 2011 Red Cell Lone Star Distance Challenge.
Luis Ramirez rode Noah Powell’s Mysterious Streaker (Streakin La Jolla-Mysterious Dreams) to third. Judd Kearl trains the 11-year-old gelding.
Completing the field were Kudos For Quick Dash (Royal Quick Dash-Kudos For Sweets-TB), Midnight Bushwhacker (Midnight Corona-The Bushwhacker-TB), and Im A Grand Believer (A Hundred Grand-Ragdoll Annie-TB).
