Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1
SMITHWORKS
by Michael Compton
Smithworks, winner of the $294,075 Speedhorse Graham Paint and Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Remington Park on May 29, is accustomed to overcoming the odds. Nearly dying at birth, and after losing his dam, Smithworks is now a 4-time winner from
just six starts, and with his latest victory, he has captured the richest Paint and Appaloosa race in history. Not bad for a horse with odds stacked against him from the start.
With Cody Smith riding for trainer Matt Whitekiller, Smithwords grabbed the lead
at the start of the 350-yard event. He dueled throughout with Capo Cabana, shrugging off the extended challenge of that rival down the lane to score by a head in a determined effort. In capturing the second stakes victory of his career, Smithworks covered the distance in :17.684, which was good for an 86 speed index.
Owned by Bryan Hawk, Smithworks was bred in Oklahoma by his trainer, Matt
