After losing his mother, Smithworks failed to take to his surrogate for feeding purposes, and Whitekiller had doubts whether he would even make it as a racehorse. Once he rec- ognized that he was going to make it to the racetrack, Whitekiller sold him to Hawk.
“I guess I should have kept him (as an owner),” Whitekiller said with a laugh follow- ing the win. “No, I’m very happy for Bryan. Smithworks’ desire to live was amazing. Most of them don’t live like that. It was a God thing.”
Smithworks is no stranger to the winner’s circle. On March 20, in his second lifetime start, Smithworks won the $198,100 Oklahoma Paint and Appaloosa Futurity at Remington Park after winning his trial heat in his career debut March 7.
He subsequently finished second in his trial for the $164,200 American Paint Classic and then was defeated by RF Livies Livewire in the main event on April 24, finishing fifth.
“He wasn’t right (in the American Paint Classic),” said Whitekiller, who with the win moved into a tie with Dee Keener as the all- time winningest Paint trainer with 334 victo- ries. “He didn’t act sick, but he wasn’t himself.”
Smithworks bounced back in a big way with his latest score, avenging the defeat to RF Livies Livewire who finished 9th in the Speedhorse
Graham Paint and Appaloosa Futurity after a troubled break as the race favorite.
Capo Cabana APHA (Capo De Capi QH-Mai Dashing Hero) and jockey Jorge Torres put up a brave fight but had to settle
for the place spot. The bay filly is owned by
Jay Ross and is trained by Dee Keener. RP Reckless Wire APHA (CRM Livewire-RP Miss Reckess Dash QH) and jockey Cody Wainscott gained ground late to finish third for owner Roy Kent Perkins and trainer Ray Enlow.
PFR Snowpike APHA (Painted Turnpike- Snowdacious), Shez Wired Up APHA (CRM Livewire-Sheza Pretty Jesse QH), De Quick Capo APHA (Capo De Capi QH-Ritas Quick Flash), Getrekt By Vito APHA (Coronado Cartel QH-Recketta), WF Heart Throb APHA (Docs Best Card QH-SW Eye Candy), RF Livies Livewire APHA (CRM Livewire-RF Livies Special) and Carole Baskin APHA (Capo De Capi QH-Sayonara) completed the order of finish.
