immediately shot to the front. She dominated throughout the 300 yards to score wire-to-wire by an easy 2-lengths in :15.375.
“As soon as they popped it, she flew out of there—she left running,” said Cervantes. “She’s something else. You’re riding and you don’t know what could come. You’re just trying to do the best hanging in there, but I knew after we broke out of the gates that we had them.”
Jensen and Young were winning their big- gest race together. “She blew out of there and left them,” said an elated Jensen. “I did not expect it like that. They probably heard us clear back in Roosevelt.”
Monty Arrossa trains Fire Fast Honey for the owners.
“This couldn’t happen to better guys,” Arrossa said. “This is the heart and soul of Quarter Horse racing right here. These guys go to the sales every year. They support the sales, support our industry, buy babies every year. I appreciate that they’ve stuck with me.”
Jensen and Young purchased Fire Fast Honey at the 2020 Ruidoso Yearling Sale for $32,000 from the consignment of Vista Equine Colorado LLC.
“We always buy horses together,” said Young. “We look at them and agree upon them. Monty always trains for us—we couldn’t do it without him.”
Fire Fast Honey broke her maiden in the Kindergarten final. In her two prior races, she ran fourth in a maiden event and second in her April 25 trial.
Arrossa was winning his first Kindergarten, one of his goals as a trainer.
“This race has been on my bucket list for quite some time,” he said. “It’s the first futurity of the year at Los Alamitos. My whole life watching Los Alamitos from Idaho, I would see all the great horses and horsemen that have won this race—it’s special.”
The Kindergarten became even more special when it was named for the late jockey Bobby Adair.
“I got to meet Bobby’s daughter, Julie Adair, tonight,” Arrossa said. “It was a magical night for us.”
Jensen and Young told Arrossa about Fire Fast Honey right after they purchased her. Arrossa noted that he had trained Fire Fast Corona, a full brother to Fire Fast Honey, for them and a third partner, “and he qualified to the Ed Burke.”
Silver Racing Farm LLC bred Fire Fast Honey in California from the winning Corona Cartel mare Coronas Fast Honey. The mare has pro- duced seven winners from 11 starters. She comes from the family of Grade 1 winners First Carolina, First Prize Robin, and First Prize Leesa.
Dutch Masters III’s homebred Southern Best (Docs Best Card-Southern Formed) fin- ished second. Erasmo Gasca rode the gelding for trainer Jaime Gomez. Southern Best won two of three previous races.
Beduino Surprise (Turbulent Times-Shelbys Surprise), owned and bred by Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas, ran third under jockey Ruben Lozano for trainer Valentin Zamudio. The gelding ran second in his trial, which was his racing debut.
Completing the field were Docs Fastlane (Docs Best Card-Bev’s Fast Lane TB), fastest
qualifier Val Frida (Stel Corona-Favorite Strawfly), La Blue Amore (Kiddy Up-Amore La Blue), Midnite Fling (Apollitical Jess- Weownthenite), FG Jess Seis (Tres Seis-Jess Walking Thru) and Resurrection Man (A Revenant-Winning Merlot).
