FEAR THE DRAGON

Odds-on favorite and fastest qualifier from the April 24 trials, Fear The Dragon might have had to work a little harder than
expected, but the classy three-year-old bay gelded son of Favorite Cartel got the job done in the $332,900 Sam Houston Derby-G3 at Sam Houston Race Park on May 14, register- ing the initial stakes win of his career.
With Rodrigo Vallejo in the irons, Fear The Dragon broke alertly and in fourth posi- tion from the inside post.
Fear The Dragon received every sub- sequent call as he covered the distance in :17.745, which was worth a 95 speed index.
The gelding grabbed an early head lead in the 350-yard test by the first call. He still had a head advantage at the top of the stretch, but he and Jess A Dashin Angela dueled through- out the lane. In a strong drive, Fear The Dragon prevailed by a neck at the finish line over that stubborn rival.
