broodmare sire Streakin Six is also an Easy Six/Raise Your Glass cross.)

CORONA CARTEL AND THE FAMILY OF SOFT MUSIC
When I asked Mickey Johnson about why he bred to Ivory James, he easily answered because he was a Corona Cartel colt. But when I started studying some of the pedigrees involved in the Paint runners in this article,
a mare named Soft Music and her family showed up in a number these runners.
Soft Music was a 1950 tobiano mare bred by Dub Carver and owned for many years by Walter Merrick. Merrick registered this mare’s first Paint foal in 1964, and this filly was the first of six foals registered and none of them had any official starts on the track. They may have been raced in non-sanctioned races.
The sire of Soft Music was Cue Ball QH by Young Midnight by Midnight. The dam
of Cue Ball was the great mare Salty. Cue
Ball was a 3/4 brother to Midnight Jr by Midnight and out of Salty. Midnight Jr was the foundation stallion for the Walter Merrick
“Most of that mare’s colts were pretty hot, but she was so docile, easy going, laid back and didn’t play a lot.”
breeding program. The dam of Soft Music was a daughter of Joe Reed P-3. Her dam was a Paint mare whose pedigree is unknown.
An added note: Walter Merrick was the breeder of Easy Jet. When I asked him why he bred the dam of Easy Jet to Jet Deck, he replied, ‘Midnight Jr’ who was the sire of the second dam of Jet Deck.
The 1965 foal out of Soft Music was Indian Music by Tonto Bars Hank. This mare is officially unraced. She is the dam of six ROM, including 1980 APHA Running World Champion Cherokee Indian, 1977 National Champion Race Horse Easy Winner, National Champion Race Futurity winner Western Music, and 1983 APHA Running Champion 2 Year Old Easy Jet Too.
Easy Jet Too is the sire of Raise A Jet, the sire of Texas Hero, who is the broodmare sire of Ivoriona, our subject mare. Then, we add Sen Tosa to the pattern as a daughter of PYC Paint Your Wagon and another representative of this Corona Cartel/Texas Hero cross. And there is also Verona, a stakes winning full sister to Friona, who is the dam of Corona Special by Corona Cartel, third in the Colors of Houston Futurity-G3.
Following are more Paint runners by Ivory James with ties to Soft Music. Champion Miss Movin On is out of Texas Fourwinds
by Texas Hero. WL Mr Worldwide, a full
brother in blood to Miss Movin On, is sired by PYC Paint Your Wagon. He won the 2015 Dash For Colors Stakes. Shez Showin Ivory
is a stakes placed runner in the Colors of Houston Futurity. She is out of Shez Showin Off, who is a Royal Quick Flash mare that is out of Texas Showboat by Texas Hero.
2014 APHA Champion Running Aged Horse/Champion Aged Stallion Osage Spirit by Ivory James, gives us a slightly different pattern with ties to Soft Music. He is out of the Paint mare Osagelamb, who is sired by Phone Trick TB. The dam of Osagelamb is Western Music, a full sister to Easy Jet Too.
The 2015 Speedhorse Triple Crown winner Painted Turnpike by PYC Paint Your Wagon gives us another cross of a son of Corona Cartel. Painted Turnpike is out of High Class Turnpike, a Royal Quick Flash mare that is out of Turnpikes Texas Hero by Texas Hero. Painted Turnpike is a full brother to Gitter Dun Turnpike, who was second
in the 2014 Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, and Turnpikers Wagon, a finalist in the 2016 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
When Turnpikes Texas Hero was bred to PYC Paint Your Wagon, they got Paint Me Turnpike, who is the winner of the 2016 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. Wagon On Turnpike, a full brother to Paint Me Turnpike, was second in the 2015 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1.
Multiple APHA Running Champion Calista Corona is by Corona Cartel and his dam is Little Sara by Treasured, by Easy Jet Too. The Corona Cartel ROM runner Corona Cash is a multiple event finalist, including the Masterpiece Paint Derby-G1, while Corona Lace is a finalist in the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. Both horses are out of White Lace, who is a full sister to Texas Hero.
Ivoriona is waiting in the wings for the start of the 2017 race season. They hope she will continue her success in Paint racing. But, Stanley and Mickey are not standing on this mare’s laurels, as they have foals on the way that will continue the Corona Cartel line of Johnson-bred runners with stallions like Wagon Tales and Kool Wagon as the sires. Meanwhile, Ivoriona is poised to take her spot with hopes of a 2016 APHA World Championship title herself.
