RP LIVE WIRE DASH

Forgive Roy Kent Perkins for regretting, somewhat, for deciding not to run RP Live Wire Dash APHA in the first leg of the
Speedhorse Triple Crown. After all, his rookie gelding came out for the second leg.
RP Live Wire Dash scored his second stakes win in the $98,200 Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity-G1 on July 28 at Fair Meadows, and won in fairly decisive fashion.
“You always think you might win that Triple Crown. We kind of kick ourselves for not giving him a chance to run in that first leg,” Perkins said. “We just didn’t want to use him up.”
Ray Enlow trains RP Live Wire Dash, and the gelding looked impressive yet again while running to his second straight victory.
With Gonzalo Gutierrez aboard, the gelding broke from the two-gate well. He led by a head at the first call and maintained that advantage going into the stretch. RP Live Wire Dash then held off Admiral Tom to win by a neck.
The 350-yard trip took :17.817, registering an 88 speed index. That was an improvement over the :17.929 performance by RP Live Wire Dash in the trials, in which he won by 1/2-length as the third-quickest qualifying time to the finals.
And, in case you were wondering . . . yes, RP
Live Wire Dash already
is paid into the third leg
of the Speedhorse Triple Crown: the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
Perkins’ approach has
worked so far, though. His
young gelding now has won
five of seven starts, includ-
ing a pair of stakes races. He
earned his blacktype in the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, held in March at Remington. In fact, RP Live Wire Dash never has finished worse than second place. He also won the American Paint Classic Futurity in April at Remington Park.
This Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 victory produced a $37,316 pay- day, pushing the total bankroll of the gelding to $141,647.
“I’ve got this older guy, Dean Hoffman, that helps me break all my babies and everything. He’s been doing this a long time with me,” Perkins said. “Dean, he told me
when he was just a baby, ‘I like everything about him.’ As a yearling, he was just outstanding. He said, ‘This baby right here is going to be the best you ever put on the ground here.’
“If you ask him to just jump over a fence, he would do it,” Perkins added. “I guess that’s what makes a race horse. All those connec- tions have got to be there.”
The story of RP Live Wire Dash actually begins more than two decades prior, when Perkins purchased the gelding’s second dam, Texas Teal, from Bobby Cox. Perkins did
so looking to breed his new purchase with Reckess Dash. However, the owners of Reckess Dash did not ship samples at the time and, at 17 years old, Texas Teal was too old to travel to the stallion. So, Perkins drove five-plus hours, per trip, to obtain samples, from which RP Miss Reckess Dash was born.
Perkins ran RP Miss Reckess Dash as a youngster before starting to breed her, as well. The mare has produced one additional
