Trainer Heath Taylor watched his three entries in the Nov. 5 Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 have three completely different starts, resulting in three very different outcomes. But the result was triumphant, as two of his starters, Jeriko and Sicario V, finished one-two.
Jeriko, Sicario V, and Champion Hesjudgeandjury went off as the first, second, and fourth choices in the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1. Bettors thought only third-choice Party Politics, a multiple Grade 1 winner, had much chance against the Taylor juggernaut, with the rest of the field in double digits.
Sicario V got away the best, spurting right to the front from the rail. Jeriko came out of the gate a little slowly, while Hesjudgeandjury stepped back and slipped right at the crucial moment, losing “all chance at the start and
just didn’t get away,” Taylor said. Jeriko, under jockey Jose Nicasio, surged forward toward the end of the 400 yards to snag the win away from Sicario V at the wire by a half-length in :19.609
