Pictured above are the winning connections - owner Sammy Valeriano, Valeriano Racing Stables LLC, trainer Heath Taylor, and jockey Francisco Calderon.
“I talked to Francisco after the race and he said the same thing, that the horse just stands back,” Taylor said. “The first jump, second jump, he just didn’t break well at all. He said that by the third or fourth jump that the horse is just talented and has so much acceleration. Halfway through he was just in a beautiful stride, accelerating great.”
Taylor explained what he has done to work on Trane Station V’s starts.
“The horse is gentle; the horse is smart; he stands good in the morning,” the trainer said. “He’s had three races without the flipping halter and how he’s had four races with the flipping halter. He never tries to flip or act up. The equipment was added in an attempt to get him to break a little bit better.”
An awkward start in Trane Station
V’s racing debut, a trial for the Ruidoso Futurity-G1, led to a second and not qualifying for the final. Trane Station V then proceeded to qualify for both the Rainbow Futurity-G1 and All American Futurity-G1, and he finished second in the finals of both.
Taylor then shipped the California-bred back to his home state, and in the Golden State Million Futurity trials Trane Station V won by an incredible 2 3/4-lengths and qualified the fastest. With the Futurity win, Trane Station V became a millionaire.
“This was only his second start at night and probably only the second time he has been out of his stall at this time of night other than his trial win,” said Taylor.
The race was somewhat bittersweet for Taylor because his father-in-law, Bruce Bell, who trained such horses as Champions Deceptively and Femmes Frolic, died a few days before the race. Taylor dedicated the victory to Bell.
“His idea-s with 2 year olds have played a huge part in our races,” Taylor said.
Valeriano Racing Stables, LLC bought Trane Station V for $130,000 at the 2022 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale from the Burns Ranch consignment. Dr. Steve Burns bred Trane Station V by crossing his homebred mare Attack The Cartel to Favorite Cartel, who stands at Burns Ranch.
Attack The Cartel won the 2013 Native Empress Handicap and finished second in
four other stakes, spending her entire racing career at Los Alamitos. The mare has produced 10 winners from 13 starters, including stakes winners Rumor Goin Round (also by Favorite Cartel), On Our Way, and Attack The Wind and stakes-placed Attacker and Attacked.
Eddie D. Willis trained second-place Unrelentless (Hes Relentless-Painted Wine Wagon) and third-place AB Wow (Apollitical Blood-Shyann Cash). Justine Klaiber rode Unrelentless for owner Reliance Ranches, LLC, while Agustin Silva piloted AB Wow for owners Jaime Bryant, Melanie Brooks, and Linda Joiner. Both Unrelentless and AB Wow broke their maidens in winning trials for the All American Futurity-G1 and then won their Golden State Million trial.
Famous Cartel Jessy (Mr Jess Perry- Famous Cartel Lady) finished fourth, followed by Relentless Coronado (Hes Helentless-SC Coronada), Favorite City (Favorite Cartel- Send City), and Hot Prodigy (Apollitical Jess-Pandorum). Mr Perrisimo (Mr Jess Perry- Boogie Special) and Goodtyme (Apollitical Jess-Havanah Goodtime) dead-heated for eighth, and Think Again Kev (KVN Corona- Budder Think Twice) finished 10th.
