 Natural-borN taleNt
Trey’s talent with and love for horses came as part of his innate makeup.
“He didn’t want to go to day care when he was little,” said his mom, Sandy, who takes care of the family business’s bookkeeping from their Lubbock, Texas, home base. “He wanted to stay home with his dad and the horses.”
As kids, Trey and his sister, Lacey—seven years older than Trey—went along to the barn with Blane while Sandy held an outside job. They’d play inside a stall blocked off with hay bales while Blane carried on with his work. As Trey got older, he’d head straight for the barn to help out after school and sports practice.
Trey’s natural talents also included athletics. He played some baseball and quarterbacked for his high school football team, earning scholarships that could have seen him through college. But although Blane and Sandy tried their best to talk him into pursuing a degree, he went with his heart and instead obtained his trainer’s license at age 17. He never looked back.
“I started training when I graduated from high school in 2006,” Trey said. “Mom and Dad wanted me to get an education, but I just wouldn’t have been happy doing that.”
Instead, he has applied his aptitude to racing.
“He’s always been interested in how the horses ran and how they were bred,” said Blane. “He’s a walking encyclopedia of horses that have lived during his lifetime.”
Sandy said she was 16 when she and Blane started dating and she thought he was the most knowledgeable horse person she’d ever met.
“But,” she said, “Trey amazes me with what he knows and remembers.”
