Trey’s training circuit includes Remington Park in Oklahoma City in spring; Ruidoso in summer; Lone Star Park near Dallas in fall; and Sunland Park near El Paso, Texas, in winter. His contributions to Team Wood have brought an uptick
in horse numbers, and with the greater workload comes a greater need for a little rest and relaxation. In his off time—which admittedly is little, with Trey being on the road for all but about two months of the year—Trey hunts and fishes, and Blane or Ramirez sometimes go along.
Both Trey and Blane see their relationship as more than a father-son bond. “We work
so well together because we’re pretty much friends,” Trey said. “He doesn’t treat me like he’s my father; we do everything together. I
consider him, really, my best friend.”
The feeling is mutual. “He’s my buddy
and it’s a thrill for me to see him win,” Blane says of Trey. “I think I get a bigger kick out of that than winning myself!”
Those friendships extend to Ramirez and the Wood Racing Stable assistants as well. “I love Ricky,” Trey said. “When I leg him up I feel 100 percent confident that he’s going to do what needs to be done. I’d trust him with my life.”
Trey added, “I don’t think anybody else has help as good as ours. Some are good enough to train on their own—and have— and it takes that for us to be successful.”
his all americaN dream
Trey’s definition of true success, held in common with most other Quarter Horse race
trainers, is to win the All American Futurity. “I’d like to win it in the next five
years,” Trey said. “It might be 20; you never know. But that’s the ultimate goal, and I want me and my dad to do it together. We’re a team.”
Trey’s training record now tops $4.8 million but in spite of his success, Trey counts his greatest achievement as being his dad’s son. “He’s taught me about life—not so much about horses; that was mostly self-inflicted,” Trey half-joked. “But he taught me how to live and do right, and to treat people how you want to be treated. I don’t think you’ll ever meet a better guy than my dad.”
Blane echoes the praise. “He’s amazing with horses. I think he’s a heck of a lot better trainer than I am.”
