alberta Bred derby
FeelIN THe FeVer
by John Moorehouse
The performance level of Feelin The Fever remains quite healthy. Herds Racing’s 3-year-old filly charged to her second stakes win on Sept. 26 in the $37,276 Alberta Bred Derby at Northlands Park.
Feelin The Fever now boasts seven wins in nine lifetime outs, and has failed to finish in the money only once thus far in her career. Also the winner of last season’s Alberta Bred Futurity-RG3 at Lethbridge,
Feelin The Fever has never
lost at that track or at
Northlands Park.
Prepped by trainer Darcy Hawkes, Feelin The Fever closed well to secure her latest victory. The filly broke from the outside starting gate in the seven-horse field near the back of the pack, but quickly raced to the front by a head by first call. Tres Seis Smooches had the lead late,
but Feelin The Fever found another gear to beat her rival to the wire by a half-length.
Juan Garcia was aboard for the 330-yard trip, completed in :17.160 to register a 93 speed index. The triumph produced a $17,145 payday for Herds Racing, and swelled the career coffers of Feelin The Fever to $61,651.
It marked the third straight win for Feelin The Fever, a streak that began in a derby trial
on July 11 at Northlands and continued with a 350-yard allowance at Grande Prairie. Feelin The Fever finished third in last year’s Bonnett/ Brodon Futurity.
Earl Brown bred Feelin The Fever out of Cash In This Lane, a 1994 mare owned by Donalda Cochrane. Cash In This Lane is stakes- placed, finishing third in the 1997 All Canadian Derby of Alberta. Six of Cash In This
Lane’s nine foals are starters, and four of those six hold stakes victories. The other stakes win- ners include Wyatt Steel, Pow Wow Lane and Exciting The Planet.
Tres Seis Smooches (Tres Seis-Sheza Soverign Dash) placed second for owner/ trainer Angelle Carter. Scott Williams did
the riding. KG Warrior (Special Red Warrior- Win Thru Traffic) led in the mid-stretch but weakened late and finished third. Kay Haus is the owner and Les Webb the trainer. Dwight Lewis was aboard.
Northforkzoom (Mezoomn-RJ Bitterroot Babe), CR Mystic Chic (Oak Tree Special- Thischicsadashing), CR Leading La Jolla (Special Leader-Fashionismyattitude) and Snake Eyed Gal (Royal Miracle Dip-Miss Casino Gal) completed the field. CR Lil Bit Of Ivory was scratched.

by Tracy Gantz
exacta bettors did well in the Sept. 29 Cricket Bars Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Will Rogers Downs. Appocalypto and Cobra Cash
won the two trials on Sept. 9 with the two fastest qualifying times, and they ran one-two in the final as the first and second choices.
Breaking like a bullet under Randy Wilson in the Cricket Bars final, Appocalypto got
the jump on his seven rivals. Paint This Kitty vied with Appocalypto
from the rail for the first half of the 400 yards, and
as Appocalypto pulled away from her, Cobra Cash closed to challenge. He couldn’t catch Appocalypto, however, who won by a half-length
in :19.986. Paint This Kitty held on for third.
Appocalypto and Cobra Cash had met twice before. Appocalypto captured the July 21 National Appaloosa
52 SPEEDHORSE, October 12, 2012
Stakes at Fair Meadows by a neck over Cobra Cash. Against Paints and Appaloosas in the Aug. 4 Tulsa State Fair Mixed Stakes, also at Fair Meadows, Appocalypto finished second to the Paint Western Rocker, while Cobra Cash ran seventh. Appocalypto now has a record of four wins in nine starts.
Dee Keener trains Appocalypto for owner Christopher Brandon, who bred the gelding
in Oklahoma from stakes- placed Miss Fancy Layne,
the Champion Appaloosa 2-Year-Old Sprint Filly of 2004. Appocalypto is Miss Fancy Layne’s only starter. Miss Fast Layne, the second dam, earned the Champion Appaloosa 2-Year-Old Sprint Filly title in 1990 with earn- ings of $49,603. Appocalypto is by the Thoroughbred Apollo, a multiple stakes win- ner and earner of $354,475.
Cody Jensen rode Cobra Cash (Dean Miracle-Joyball) in both the Cricket Bars trial and final. Luis Villafranco trains the geld- ing for Gary Vaughan. Cobra Cash broke his maiden before his placing in the National Appaloosa Stakes.
Jeff Adams’ homebred Paint This Kitty (PYC Paint Your Wagon-R Ms Kitty) made her racing debut in her Cricket Bars trial, fin- ishing sixth. G.R. Carter Jr. rode her in both races for trainer Leslie Padilla.
Completing the field in the Cricket Bars were Good Vision (Real Visions-Miss Bold
Z), Douxraymelily (Easy Doux-Oh Lily Win), Panda Doll (Real Visions-Eyesa Knockout), Aint Your Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess Streakin), and La Jollas Eye Apeal (Dolce La Jolla-Miss Eye Appeal). James Michael and Mr Flare Up were scratched.
