Mimi Wells’ Forrest Fire sported a record of 17 top-three finishes in 29 starts with earnings of more than $264,000 entering the Katella Handicap
on March 11 at Los Alamitos, and added the title of stakes winner to his list of accomplishments when the race was over.
Making the 30th start of his career, the 5-year-old gelding scored a half-length victory over Significant Cartel to win the 350-yard Katella Handicap in :17.646. Ridden for the first time by jockey Oscar Peinado for trainer Dan Francisco, Forrest Fire earned $13,750 of the $25,000 purse.
“I’m on a high right now after this win,” said Wells, who bred Forrest Fire out of the stakes- winning mare Chicks Tell, who was the James V.A. Carter Award winning broodmare in 2010. “I’m proud of him. I think this win will help him pick his head up and hopefully he’ll be able to compete with the big boys this year.”
Forrest Fire has competed in 15 stakes races in his lifetime including Grade 1 events such as the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, Governor’s Cup Futurity, Los Alamitos Winter Derby, Los Alamitos Super Derby and the Southern California Derby.
Vinewood Farms’ Significant Cartel (Corona Cartel-Dash Master Miss) was second with Francisco Rubio in the saddle for trainer Juan Aleman.
There was a deadheat for third between Alejandro Ibarra’s Lifes Been Good (Heza Motor Scooter-Nola Darling), ridden by Cesar DeAlba
for trainer Valentin Zamudio, and San Gregorio Racing Stables Inc.’s Flaming Out (Walk Thru Fire-Jetsetting Girl), ridden by Saul Ramirez Jr. for trainer Ugo De La Torre. Buying Snow (Snowbound- TB-Aquisitive), Choose Fast (A Regal Choice-Let’s Eat Lunch-TB) and Parsons Rock (First Down Dash-Mini Rock) completed the field. Jumpn Shake was scratched.

It was appropriate that Charal Kid won the latest running of the Streakin La Jolla Stakes. After all, Charal Kid was sired by the namesake of the
$20,000 event.
Bred by owner Malinche Cattle Company,
Charal Kid made a smooth run from the outside starting gate of an eight-horse field to claim his 10th career stakes win and 14th overall victory in 39 outs. The Eusevio Huitron trainee now has logged at least one triumph in stakes company in each of his four seasons of competition since debuting as a 3-year-old.
The heavy favorite at less than 3-2 odds, Charal Kid covered the 400 yards in :19.820 and posted
a 101 speed index, his first in triple digits since finishing second in the Ancira Ford Derby at Retama last July. The first-place payday of $12,000 pushed Charal Kid’s career earnings to $346,860.
Malinche Cattle Company also owns This Special Feature, the dam of Charal Kid. The 1998 mare has foaled eight offspring, two of whom have made starts. Charal Kid is the only member of the brood to have a racing career of any distinction.
Pass Tha Cash (Strike The Cash-Quick Medicine) made a strong finish to secure runner-up honors for owner Felipe Barron. Trainer Jeff Acuna did the prep work and Eddie Cox drew the riding assignment. Awholeseparategame (Game Patriot- Separada) nosed out third. Dehart Farms owns the gelding, trained by Justin Dehart and ridden by Lucas Constantin.
The remaining order of finish was Heza Gonna Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Iwanna Dash), Martini Mountain (Panther Mountain-Glitz Gator), Point Of Deception (Feature Mr Jess-Daring Deception), Ivansbay (Brookstone Bay-Flyin Features) and Hydrostatic (Hawkinson-Red Set Pat). Senorita Perry and Taylors Toastin Papa were scratched.
