The AQHA announced they will be launching
a new website with enhanced features and a new database system. The redesign includes improved search capabilities and navigation; mobile-device friendliness; the ability to complete more business transactions online; a fresh, modern look; new content; new and better opportunities for corporate partners and advertisers; personalization capabili- ties; and translated navigation in six languages.
JANUARY 23
Resistance to dewormer products prompted the Food and Drug Administration to request that animal drug companies voluntarily revise their product labels for their approved anthelmintics used in livestock. The FDA advises a targeted, evidence based worm control program for equines that includes fecal equine control test- ing (F.E.C.T.). The FDA also noted the impor- tance of retesting F.E.C.T. after an appropriate dewormer treatment has been administered.
JANUARY 28
The Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) and the University of Arizona’s Racetrack Industry Program (RTIP) announced plans to launch an educational pro- gram in the third quarter of 2019 for horse racing investigators employed by racing commissions and tracks. This program is the first of its kind and will complement the work of the Organization
of Racing Investigators (ORI) and the Racing Officials Accreditation Program (ROAP).

Former mayor Jerry Hodge, along with his wife Margaret, gifted $10 million to the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. The gift supports construction and development of the future School of Veterinary Medicine and will help revolutionize services throughout state agricultural communities. Construction of two new veterinary school buildings is expected to cost nearly $90 million. More than $90 million has been raised in non-state funds for the project. Texas Tech is seek- ing approximately $17.35 million from the Texas Legislature to help support initial operations.

All-time leading breeder and owner Dr. Ed Allred reached another milestone when he became the first owner to reach 1,500 career Quarter Horse wins. The AQHA Hall of Fame member reached the mark with Oatie Three, who was trained by Scott Willoughby and ridden by Vinnie Bednar. The gelding scored to a 1/2-length victory at Los Alamitos on Feb. 8.
JANUARY 11
Jesus Nunez became the 19th trainer to win 500 Quarter Horse races at Los Alamitos
after saddling EG High Desert Farms’ Eagles Policy to victory in a 330-yard allowance. The trainer also saddled Jess Ravin to win the 2018 Mildred Vessels Memorial-G1, and trained Champion Buccaneer Beach.
JANUARY 16
The New Mexico Racing Commission (NMRC) Rules and Medication Committee voted to pass
a zero tolerance rule for albuterol. The new rule will be utilized for post-race testing as well as the out of competition testing program used by the NMRC. The rule is not breed specific and applies to both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds.
