APRIL 1
Longtime Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred track Portland Meadows in Oregon, which began oper- ations in 1946, announced they will close their its doors for good in June of 2019. In 2013, the track underwent rebranding efforts by Portland creative agency OMFGCO. Portland Meadows was home to the Far West Futurity, Baxter Andruss Futurity and the Portland Meadows Fall Derby.

Bruce Salard was named the Executive Director of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association (LQHBA), replacing the position vacated by Tony Patterson. Salard has an extensive financial background and is pas- sionate about horseracing in his home state.

There was no racing in South Dakota for the first time in decades. Fort Pierre Racetrack announced they would host no races in 2019 and two weeks later it was announced that Brown County Fair in Aberdeen would close as well. State legislators recently approved $120,000
over two years for racing, but the funds were not enough to keep the industry afloat. Previously, the state House rejected legislation to create a revenue stream for horse racing by taxing out-of- state companies that take online wagers on horse racing from South Dakota residents.

Sun Downs in Kennewick, Washington, ended their mixed meet that began on April 27. Brad Boyce presented the meet leaders with belt buckles, including leading Quarter Horse trainer Jose A. Rosales Gomez, leading rider Jaime E. Lopez, and leading Thoroughbred trainer Amy Nelson.

The World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) concluded their semi-final rounds at the Lazy E Arena. The event paid out more than $500,000 to over 500 athletes. Eight competi- tors from each discipline advanced to the Title Town Stampede, a one day $1 million Major Rodeo on June 1 at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The event was held in conjunc- tion with the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Unleash The Beast event.

Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, Texas, ended their Quarter Horse meet that began on April 12. There was a 4-way tie for lead- ing owner honors, with Terrazas Family, Jorge Haddad, Pete Scarmardo and Sunset Well Service Inc. each winning four races. The leading trainer was Santiago Riojas Jr, winning the first leading trainer title of his career with 25 wins, and the leading rider title was given to Francisco Calderon with 24 wins.

Lucile Vigouroux became the 2019 American Horse Publications (AHP) Student Award Winner during the AHP Equine Media Conference. A 2019 graduate of Centenary University, Vigouroux earned her B.S. in Equine Studies with a concentra- tion in Equine Science. She is now pursuing a master’s degree in Equine Performance, Health and Welfare at Nottingham Trent University in England.

Equine health researcher and Pennsylvania Racing Commissioner Dr. Corrine Sweeney DVM was named the new Chair of the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI). Sweeney has served on the commission since 2008, is Associate Dean at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and is an author of the 2014 Consensus Statement of the independent American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine entitled “Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage in Horses.”

The first John Andreini Scholarship recipients were announced. From 27 applicants, six students were selected by the All American Ruidoso Downs Foundation (AARDF) Board of Directors to receive $1,000 each. The recipients were Karina Alvarez (New Mexico), Darin Andrew Chavers (Colorado), Tylo Lo Farrar (Texas), Cheyann Lynn Jaramillo (New Mexico), Colten Gavin O’Dell (California), and Wyatt Dillon Stinebaugh (Texas).

Racing regulatory commissions were alerted
by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) to be on the lookout for potentially dangerous practices that may arise from the ban of giving race day furosemide, such as intravenous formaldehyde, denying a horse food and water for 24- to 36-hours prior to a race, use of the herbal drug Kratom, and nickel treatments.

All-time leading breeder and owner Dr. Ed Allred reached another milestone when he became the first owner with 100 career Quarter Horse stakes vic- tories. The AQHA Hall of Fame member reached the mark when Well Good won the Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3 at Los Alamitos. Trained by Scott Willoughby and ridden by Vinnie Bednar, Well Good won the $35,000 event by 3/4-lengths.

Tinys Corona Queen was named 2018 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year. The mare earned points as the number 1 leading dams
of stakes winners, number 3 leading dam of stakes wins and the number 5 leading dam of money earners. The million-dollar producer’s offspring include Lynnder 16, Reacher 16, First Of 15 and Hardtoget.
