The Indiana Horse Racing Commission voted to prohibit the use of albuterol in Quarter Horses. The change was in place for the Indiana Grand Racing and Casino 2019 race meet, where 19 stakes races totaling more than $1.5 million were contested.
MARCH 16
The Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association (LQHBA) Scholarship Fund awarded two students with $2,000 scholarships. In the winner’s circle
for the presentation were Bossier City Mayor Lo Walker, scholarship winner Hunter Fertenbaugh, LQHBA board members Jimmie Hatcher and JoBaya Foreman, and scholarship winner Maddison McFadden. Over $570,000 has been earmarked for this program since its inception in 2001.

Turf Paradise began pre-race vet exams for
all horses in an effort to lower the number of equine fatalities. A recent study by the Arizona Department of Gaming showed 50 horses were euthanized during the 2017-18 season, mostly after leg or ankle injuries, which is double the national equine death rate at tracks.

The Lone Star Park Charitable Foundation (LSPCF) for Grand Prairie hosted its annual grant ceremony at Lone Star Park, selecting 24 local Grand Prairie charity and non-profit organizations to receive $50,000 in funds. Since its formation in 2001, the LSPCF has awarded over $1.1 million.

The Board of Directors of the Jockeys’ Guild stated that until the research being conducted
by the RMTC, AAEP and Grayson Jockey
Club Foundation determines the effects that Bisphosphonates has on young horses, it would be best to ban the use of this medication immediately in horses under four years of age. Bisphosphonates are a class of drugs that prevents
the loss of bone density and are often used to treat osteoporosis. Experts believe that the use of this drug could cause bones to be more susceptible to fractures. The board stated they would also like to see improved methods of detection and strict guidelines for its use in horses over 4 years of age.

The California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) voted to ban jockeys from using whips to urge their mounts. The new rule limits riders to using whips “when necessary to control the horse for the safety of the horse or rider.” The previous rule allowed jockeys to use the whip three times in succession before pausing. The racing board also approved rules suspending the use of 11 medica- tions and reducing by half the permitted race-day dosage of Lasix. The suspended medications are phenylbutazone, flunixin, ketoprofen, bethamesa- sone, dexamethasone, diclofenac, firocoxib, meth- ylprednisone, triamcinolone and Isoflupredone.
MARCH 31
The 2018-2019 Chariot & Cutter World Championship was run on March 31 at the Salt Lake County Equestrian Park in South Jordan, Utah. The top three teams from the first division competed for the World Champion title. The 2014 World Championship Team Rowdy Friends Racing from Toole Valley, Utah, with their 2014 World Championship team BS Big Shoes and Dont Gimme No BS claimed the 2019 World Chariot Championship title, an accomplishment that has not been achieved before.
MARCH 31
The Interscholastic Equestrian Association
(IEA) announced that the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) has become their newest affiliate. The two organizations will cross-promote in a variety of methods and venues that will include benefits and discounts for members. APHA will also provide sponsorship of one award for the “Most Valuable Paint Horse” of the show at both the 2019 Hunt Seat and Western National Finals.

Champion Five Bar Cartel was named the 2018 Freshman Sire of the Year. In his first crop to race, Five Bar Cartel sired 58 starters and 27 winners which accumulated 42 wins and seven stakes wins. He also had six stakes winners and two stakes-placers, in addition to 40 Register of Merit earners.
 MARCH 11
2018 AQHA World Champion, Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding Bodacious Eagle was retired from racing to be trained for halter and performance by Ross Roark. Owned by Johnny Trotter, the geld- ing won 14 of 33 starts, earning $1,293,444. “I would like for him to become a Supreme Champion with his achievements on the race- track, and now hopefully in the performance arena,” says Trotter.
MARCH 12
Louisiana Downs concluded their 2019 Quarter Horse season, reporting positive increases in both on-track and off-track handle. The leading owner award went to Jose Barron, Lanny Keith was the leading trainer for the second consecutive year, and Everardo Rodriguez won his second leading rider title. Rodriguez was also honored as 2018 LQHBA Co-Champion Jockey on April 13.
