BULLY PULPIT
by Tracy Gantz
When 2-year-old Paint gelding Bully Pulpit wins a race for Dan and Kaye Jones, he makes them proud on two levels. Not only do they own the gelding, they also bred and raced his sire, Paint Champion CRM Livewire. That made the victory in the June 3 Speedhorse Graham Paint and Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Remington Park even sweeter.
In fact, the entire team involved with
Bully Pulpit trace to CRM Livewire. Matt Whitekiller trained father and son, while Cody Smith rode them both.
CRM Livewire stands at the Bowlan fam- ily’s Bowlan Farms in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. Dr. Chuck Bowlan bred Bully Pulpit.
“The village that it takes to raise an animal to this point—we want to thank them all,” said Kaye Jones. “Matt, Cody, and the Bowlan’s have done a great job and we try to be loyal and support the people who came up with us.”
Kaye calls them her “racing family,” and many of them turned out in support for
the Grade 1 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity. They not only got to see Bully Pulpit win, but they witnessed CRM Livewire’s offspring finish one-two when fastest qualifier Hotwiredotcom APHA ran
second in the final just behind Bully Pulpit.
Hotwiredotcom won
his trial wire-to-wire by 1 1/4-lengths on May 20. Bully Pulpit, the second-fastest qualifier, also won his trial. Fans bet Hotwiredotcom down to 4-5 favoritism over Bully Pulpit at 2-1 for the final event.
When the gate opened
for the 350-yard Speedhrose
Graham Paint and Appaloosa Futurity-G1, Hotwiredotcom vied for the lead with Hang Ten while Bully Pulpit broke sixth from the four-hole. Bully Pulpit rallied well, overhaul- ing the leaders and scoring the win with a 1/2-length margin in :17.790.
The $77,000 winner’s share of the purse boosted Bully Pulpit’s earnings to $125,143 from just five lifetime starts.
“We got away a little sluggish, but that left us a hole,” said jockey Cody Smith. “I only touched him one time left-handed, and he just exploded when I did.”
People poured into the winner’s circle after the victory to greet the now two-time Grade 1 stakes winner.
“It looked like the All American in the winner’s circle, we had so many people down there,” said Kaye.
“It was awesome and really wonderful.”
Some of their family mem- bers, however, couldn’t get to the races that night.
“They were so mad because this is the one they really wanted to attend,” said Kaye. “We had one grand-
daughter and her boyfriend.”
Another granddaughter, Callie Rose
Malsbury, was unable to be there. She’s the one whose initials make up the “CRM” in CRM Livewire’s name.
Smith and Kaye both mentioned the effort it took to get Bully Pulpit to become the pol- ished racehorse he is.
“People don’t realize how much work was done to get this horse to this point,” said Smith. “He was wild, I’m not going to lie.”
Smith broke Bully Pulpit, who was ram- bunctious early. “He was one of those Cody was afraid to let go because he didn’t know when he’d stop him,” admitted Kaye. “Bully Pulpit loved to run, and he just kept running.”
