STONE COLD LEADER
by Dillon Hamilton
Fastest qualifier from the June 3 trials and odds on favorite, Stone Cold Leader ran away with his first stakes victory in the 300-
yard $184,000 Gordon Mobley Futurity at Indiana Grand Race Course on June 17.
Trainer, Joe Davis felt confident about the gelding’s chances after his trial performance. “In the trials, we saved him a lit-
tle bit, but he just ran out front
where he wanted to be,” Davis said. “I knew he still had a little left for the finals. We didn’t push him the last 50 yards.”
Davis has worked with the gelding since November and is pleased with his progress. “He’s
a little quirky, but he’s come around and has been professional. He’s stayed pretty sound and hasn’t been much of a problem.”

Rolando Pina. “My biggest worry was getting away from the gates without getting in trouble. I thought if he could get away then it was going to be hard for anyone to catch him,” Davis said.
Stone Cold Leader won driving away by 2 1/4-lengths in :15.469. The win was impressive, even for a seasoned trainer like Davis. “After

he got clear, it was just watching how far he would stretch his lead. He’s an exceptional racehorse. They don’t come around often.”
Owner Patrick Richardson & Davis plan to keep Stone Cold Leader in Indiana, citing the oppor- tunities he has in his state. But, they will look to stretch him out to longer distances.
“The next 2 futurities will actually be at 350- yards and that’ll be his wheelhouse,” Davis said.
