Mr Jess Perry Stakes
IMPERIAL EAGLE
by Danny Camp
The old schoolers called it the consolation. Now it’s called the Mr Jess Perry Stakes. In any case, the 11 thru 20 fastest times from the May 28 trials to the Ruidoso Derby were given preference to this race, and the hopefuls lined up to run at a $100,000 purse. Imperial Eagle was first to enter the gates in the 1-hole, and he was the first to cross the line at the end of the 400 yards. The 3-year-old gelding may have had a long wait in the gate, but he got away quickly when the starter said go. Regular pilot Esgar Ramirez kept his mount from drifting, and the effort gave them a head victory. Imperial Eagle stopped the clock at :19.845. This win tops off an already impressive career
for Imperial Eagle, who won last year’s All American Futurity-G1. He has won 7 of 11 races, also including the 2016 Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1 & Sunland Park Winter Juvenile The $42,000, winner’s share from this race takes his earnings to $1,763,907. Imperial Eagle was the 2016 Champion Two Year Old and Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding.
Owner Charles Robinson passed away just before the trials, but his wife Christina is carrying on the leg- acy. The gelding, trained by Tony Sedillo, was bred by Fredda Draper out 5-time stakes winner and Speedhorse 2016 Broodmare of the Year Jenuine Joy. Imperial Eagle is the top earner from her 5 starters/money earners.
B D Illusion (Bodacious Dash-Effortless Illusion) was 2nd under Rodrigo Vallego for Bennie & Teresa Jeter and trainer Judd Kearl. C Twister Seis (Tres Seis-D E Bella Vita) was 3rd under G. R. Carter for Randy Smith & trainer Michael Joiner. Followed

MR PERRY STRONG

The $100,000 June 11 Ruidoso Juvenile, for horses who failed to qualify for the Ruidoso Futurity during the May 26-27 trials, may have signaled
a coming out party of sorts for Licon Farm and Ranch’s promising gelding Mr Perry Strong.
Ridden by L. Martinez, Mr Perry Strong broke alertly in the 350 yard test, grabbed the early lead and edged clear late for a decisive 1 3/4-length win. He stopped the timer in :17.633, earning a speed index of 91 for trainer Michael Joiner. Following the impressive score, Joiner indicated that his charge will likely be pointed to the trials for the Rainbow Futurity-G1 on July 7 and 8.
Bred to be a nice one, Mr Perry Strong, a $25,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, is out of
the Grade 1/Grade 2 stakes winner Strength In Numbers. The mare won 7 of 31 starts, including
the 2007 Los Alamitos Invitational Championship S.-G1 and four additional stakes events, and earned $267,746. She is also the dam of Lonely In Front BR, a stakes winner in Mexico. With 2 wins from 3 starts, Mr Perry Strong is now her top earner with $44,756.

over 3rd-place finisher BF Favorite Folly (Favorite Cartel-Eyesa Folly) and jockey Cipriano Vidana. Preston Cloud owns the runner-up and Birrell Farms campaigns BF Favorite Folly.
