Selma Stakes
ZENERGETIC
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Brian Stroud bought Zenergetic in 2014 for $21,000, and up to this year the filly had just about won herself out. She has stepped it up even more in 2017 by winning the June 9 Selma Stakes at Retama Park.
The second choice to favored Brookside, Zenergetic broke fourth and had some catching up to do in the 350-yard event. Jockey Juan Garcia Jr. encouraged her, and she responded, passing horses quickly to win by 1/2-length in :17.683.
Stroud trains Zenergetic for the Zenergetic Group. The filly broke her maiden in her racing debut and won a futurity trial in 2015. She came into the Selma having won a May 15 allowance race at Sam Houston Race Park.
Bobby Cox bred Zenergetic in Texas, and he consigned her to the 2014 Texas Quarter Horse Association Yearling Sale, where Stroud purchased her. Zenergetic is out of the the winning First Down Dash mare Zenergy, who has produced four starters, all winners, including The Prize Classic stakes win- ner in Mexico, Enthusiastique.
Judd Kearl saddled the second and third horses: Jerry Chapman’s homebred Million Dollar Kiss
(Jess Louisiana Blue-Stoli Kiss) and Crown Racing and James Spry’s Jesstempting (Tempting Dash-
Jess Charming). Juan Vazquez rode Million Dollar Kiss, who captured the 2014 Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge and the 2016 Invitational Bonus Challenge Stakes.
