MUSCLES DIABLO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
On May 7, two qualifyinrg races were held for the Revelacion Classic where 20 candidates participated to go for their first
classic, of which only 10 with the fastest times qualified to the final and the others were eliminated. The distance was 350 yards, and three fillies got the best times: Y Paint Paris at :17.244, Muscles Diablo at :17.276, and The Ivory Letter at :17.327. These were also the favorites in the final race ran on May 21.
It was a clean race from start to finish. A close competition was established from the beginning between Muscles Diablo (#8) and Y Paint Paris (#9), to which DM Mary Corona (#5) joined to make a trifecta of females on their arrival at the finish line.
Muscles Diablo, however, scored the win and covered the distance in :17.16 for a 100 speed index, improving much from her quali- fying time. The winner had Moises Gonzalez Garcia as rider, and he managed her perfectly and led her to her first classic win and her fourth victory from nine starts.
The daughter of Valiant Hero and out of
Zoomin To Win by Azoom, was bred in the United States by Kimberly & Herman Hogue.
She won her maiden
at Delta Downs. Later she
was acquired by her current
cuadra, San Lázaro de Arará, debuting for them on June 5, 2016, in the trials of the Revelacion Classic, coming in second in the finals behind Rosey Posey. She then participated in the Mexican Derby where she finished third. She did not have equal luck in the Felix Bañuelos and AQHA Distaff Challenge until winning her heat for the Revelacion and the following finals, when she became a black type runner.
This is the third classic won by the team of the Cuadra San Lázaro de Arará in the current season, having previously taken the The Prize Classic (with Azoomin Jamie) and the Mexico Futurity (with Reina de Reinas), consolidating the supremacy that it previously established in 2016 when it was recognized
by the AMCCCCM as Champion Cuadra by classics won.
For this race, Muscles Diablo was saddled by the former rider and now trainer Leonilo Cruz Garcia, being the first race added to his record. The prize to the
winner was $402,060 pesos (approximately $21,285 US) from a total purse of $670,000 pesos (approximately $35,740 US).
.
As already mentioned, second place at the line was for the beautiful black filly Y Paint Paris (PYC Paint Your Wagon - First Prize Paris) under the direction of Francisco Javier Fernandez, for the Cuadra Los Gavilanes and trainer Rubén Romo García. Although she had a better performance than in the qualifiers, her :17.21 in the finals was insufficient to stay with the leader.
The surprising sorrel mare DM Mary Corona (Tinys First Corona-Mary La Jolla) came in third place directed by Mario Alberto López Marmolejo for the Cuadra Bastida and trainer Gonzalo Bastida Pacheco.
