The conditions assigned to the AQHA Claiming Challenge of Mexico were for runners three years and older who participated in claiming races for $80,000 pesos, or $5,000 dollars, between March 31, 2016, and March 31, 2017, and who also paid a fee of $10,000 pesos (approximately US $525).
There were 14 contenders who ran the qualifying races on April 14. The 10 fastest at 350 yards qualified, with Chicky Perry being the best positioned on top at :17.46 followed by Cartel Jess with :17.68.
In the April 30 finals, these two were pre- ferred by the fans at the betting window, along with the filly La Petra Cool Cía. The results saw Cartel Jess (#6) from the center of the track and well led by Paul Osvaldo Rodriguez snatch the lead from Chicky Perry (#5) in the final yards by a neck’s difference.
The time of the race was :17.41 for a 93
speed index. This was the seventh victory in eight starts for Cartel Jess, and the second clas- sic added to his record. On
Nov. 20, 2016, he finished
second in the Alfonso Patiño
Martínez Aceves Classic.
But winner Zanjero was dis-
qualified and Cartel Jess was
promoted to first place.
Cartel Jess, a four-year- old gelding, was bred in Mexico by Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal, owner of his sire Jesstified as well as his dam Saqqara, by Corona Cartel.
Cartel Jess is owned by
Cuadra San Diego del Espejo
and was saddled by trainer
Ramón Guerrero Trejo. The purse for this race was $276,000 pesos (approximately $14,475
US), of which $165,600 pesos (approximately $8,685 US), was credited to the winner’s
account.
Chicky Perry (Xplorador-
Turn Down Delight) took second place for Cuadra MRL, led by Moisés González García. His trainer is Honorio Ramos López. Like the winner, he was
bred by Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal.
La Petra Cool Cía (Too Cool To Fool-A Smigdin Special) achieved third place at the line assisted by Arturo Sánchez for Rancho La Compañía. She was saddled
by trainer Victor Hugo Ramirez Moreno. Also participating were Zanjero
