Ed Burke Juvenile Stakes
CALIFORNIA EAGLE
by Tracy Gantz
Tender Flyer produced two foals in 2015, and both of them ended up in the trials for the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 at Los Alamitos. Platki, the mare’s colt by Corona Cartel, was the fastest quali- fier. Her other, California Eagle, didn’t qualify, but he captured the June 18 Ed Burke Juvenile Stakes.
Breaking from post nine under jockey Martin Arriaga, California Eagle quickly took the lead in the 350-yard race. He battled with Matilda Czech and then pulled away for a 1/2-length victory in :17.781, earning an 88 speed index.
Trainer Juan Aleman and owner JGA Racing Stables Inc. had collaborated with Fire And Sass
to win the recent Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G3. They did it again with California Eagle.
Legacy Ranch Inc. bred California Eagle in California from 2-time stakes winner Tender Flyer. She has produced 17 winners in 22 starters, includ- ing stakes winner Visual Magic and stakes-placed Flying Fig who is her top earner, the latter second in the 2010 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
EG High Desert Farms’ homebred Matilda Czech (Fast Prize Cartel-Short Czech) finished sec- ond with Cruz Mendez aboard. Valentin Zamudio trains the filly, who broke her maiden in her Futurity trial after running fourth in a maiden race.
G.J. Rangel rode Live It Up (Foose-The Partys On Fire) to third for trainer Jose Flores and owner Howard Nichols. In three previous starts, Live It Up finished third once.
Completing the field were Magic Corona
MV (Corona Cartel-Special Queen SA), Luxor
Of Appeals MV (Tres Seis-Queen Of Appeals), A Political Lady (Apollitical Jess-Another Wise Lady), Hazel Dazel (Corona Cartel-Huckleberry Mojito), Terrific Temptation (Tempting Dash-Terrific Energy), Dating Game (TR Dasher-Singles Scene) and Gerbera Glass (Hawkinson-Floribunda).
Vandys Flash Handicap
KISSED BY AN EAGLE
by Tracy Gantz
When a seven-horse field includes six stakes winners, that’s tough competition, no matter what type of race it is.
“This was a field good enough for a Grade 1 race,” said Mark Brown.
Mark and Peggy Brown had entered their own stakes winner, homebred Kissed By An Eagle, in the $25,000 Vandy’s Flash Handicap at Los Alamitos on June 25. The third choice, Kissed By An Eagle broke from the outside post under jockey Cesar DeAlba and flew to the front. Favored Lotta Blues Man tried to stay with him, but Kissed By An Eagle vanquished that rival by 3/4-length in :19.757, earning a 92 speed index.
Dennis Givens now trains Kissed By An Eagle for the Browns. In 2016, the gelding won the John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Championship Challenge.
The Browns bred Kissed By An Eagle in Idaho from their graded stakes-winning homebred Dreaming Of Kisses. The mare has produced 100% money earners from three starters, including Jess My Kiss, who qualified for the recent Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
Lucky Seven Ranch’s homebred Lotta Blues Man (Favorite Cartel-Lotta Love For Robyn) finished second. Cody Jensen rode the gelding for trainer Mike Casselman. Last year, Lotta Blues Man won the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and placed in two other seven-figure futurities.
Monty Arossa trained Bannister (Maknmoves- Goddess Artemis) to finish third, with jockey Jesus Ayala up. Denny and Sandy Weight own the geld- ing, who earlier this year won the James S. Smith Memorial Handicap.
Completing the field were Stelfast (Stel Corona- The Goodbye Kisser), Favorite Aquaholic (Favorite Cartel-Aqua Hawk), Imaqtpie (One Famous Eagle- Sizzling) and Hold Sway (Foose-Feminista).
Indigo Illusion Handicap
TRIPPYS ROYAL JESS
by Tracy Gantz
Twice this year Trippys Royal Jess missed becom- ing a stakes winner, finishing second. But in the June 24 Indigo Illusion Handicap at Los Alamitos, the filly got the job done smartly.
Caesar DeAlba has ridden Trippys Royal Jess to those close finishes, when she finished second in the Seal Beach Handicap and La Pacifica Handicap. The jockey knew that if his filly broke well, she could get there, which is exactly what happened. Trippys Royal Jess came out of the 4-gate in second and quickly dashed to the lead. She drew away to post a 3/4-length victory in :17.527 for 350 yards, earning a 95 speed index.
“I’ve always liked this filly,” said DeAlba. “Tonight she broke very sharp and ran up the track. When she broke that good, I knew I was in good shape.”
Christopher O’Dell trains Trippys Royal Jess for owner/breeder Abigail Kawananakoa. It is a family that Kawananakoa has overseen for quite a while, as she bred the first two dams.
Kawananakoa bred Trippys Royal Jess in California out of winner Trippys Royal Dash. She has produced 100% money earners from nine start- ers, including Canada Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Colt HRH Tres Royale. Trippys Royal Jess is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Eduardo Nicasio piloted Scholarly (TR Dasher-Now You Comeat Noon) to second for owner Kolleen Ledgerwood and trainer Roberto Dominguez. Last year, Scholarly won the California Breeders Freshman Fillies Stakes.
Jim Walker’s homebred Doing Trix (One Sweet Jess-A Perfect Cocktail) finished third with Cruz Mendez aboard. Monty Arossa trains the filly, who had won three of her previous four starts.–
Rounding out the field were Sweet Aguila (One Sweet Jess-First Magical Dash), Rayshas Pink Sky (Dominyum-FDD Catena) and Staggering Stride (Mr Jess Perry-Dinastia Toll BRZ).
